Navigation Maps sadly outdated

The Navigation system on my RA4 are sadly outdated. When I contacted NAVTEC who provides the maps, they gave me a BS answer that maps are updated periodically and could/or would not tell me when the 2014 Grand Cherokee maps would be available.

I believe that Chrysler/Jeep should be ashamed for selling such an inferior product. My 5 year old hand held Tom Tom has better and more up to date maps. Major road changes that are over a year old in Orlando, Florida are inaccurately shown in the NAV system and while in Atlanta 10 days ago the Nav system had me exit I-75 15 miles away from my hotel, which I later found to be within 2 blocks of I-75

I plan on making a complaint to Jeep and for those of us that have shelled out $$$ for this piece of junk some lawyer should initiate a class action.

Other that the pitiful NAV system, I still like my GC

Re: Navigation Maps sadly outdated

I'm hoping that they will offer free upgrade at some point. Huge reconfiguration of I278 where I live and probably 1/2 of the exits near my house have been moved or reconfigured. Huge pain. Have to kill the NAV once I get close otherwise would be routed through exit that does not even exist and keeps on complaining.

If somebody is from out of town than he is really screwed. Interesting enough Google Maps are for the most part up 2 date (except maybe the changes, new exist and new access ramp that was opened recently).

It should be free if it is ever updated. I wasted my money for this piece of crap for a navigation system. I wish some one would file a class action as this system is as bad a design as the Affordable Care Act. If any one is heading east on SR 408 (toll) the last exit before the $2.00 toll booth has changed so anyone who follows the Nav system will have to pay $4.00 and waste 8 miles to get back on track. No wonder why the disclaimer.

Even a cheap Tom-Tom is far better. The only advantage of having this piece of junk in the RA4 is there is nothing stuck to the windshield with a cord going down to a 12v outlet. It is inconceivable to me how a company as large as Chrysler would tolerate such poor outdated map software from a vendor and worse yet not guarantee the software under their warrantee.

Re: Navigation Maps sadly outdated

I am going to guess map updates will be $150... that was the going rate for the Acura and Lexus (Acura still spams me telling me I should update my maps for the special price of $150 )

Some things never change. We bought our Jeep in January 2008 and it didn't have streets in our new development that was built from 2003 to 2007. (Our house was built in 2005.)

I've only purchased one map update a few years ago and I think it cost over $100.

Re: Navigation Maps sadly outdated

This sounds like an opportunity for a start up company to compete. When customers are dissatisfied with the product and get tired of complaining, A new company should find it easy to move in and take over. Maybe they are waiting for patents to run out.
When Navtec is being out performed by Garmin and Tom=Tom and enough customers are dissatisfied, they will lose out in the end. A bad reputation does not help them win back their poor customer service

Re: Navigation Maps sadly outdated

Garmin uses Navteq for its maps and TomTom uses TeleAtlas. I've always wondered why Navteq was the only provider of map data (wasnt aware of TeleAtlas)... guessing the start-up cost is the barrier to entry?

I've been using Garmin GPS handheld units for years. I always found that the data on the maps, even the newest ones that come out, were at least 3 years behind. I'm assuming that the newer maps for our Jeeps aren't going to be updated any more than that. This is one of the reasons why I don't update my maps every year and wait at least two or three years. Since I have 2011 maps in my 2012 Jeep I'll probably update it next year in 2014. The data on it, though, will probably have data that was current up to 2010 - 2011.

Re: Navigation Maps sadly outdated

My daughter has a 2011 Mercedes C300 with awd. she has their pop-up nav in her console. it is basically monochrome and cartoonish compared to ours in the WK2 - I looked at a 2013 ML350 when I was selecting my Summit and that seemed to me to be very similar to hers when I compared them. At least that's how it looked to me.

So I definitely don't agree with the OP about ours being unusable or some such.

Re: Navigation Maps sadly outdated

NAVTECH typically charges $150 for map updates. A few folks with MY12 JGCs built between certain dates did receive a "free" map update, although it was still very much out of date. Outside of that, expect to pay the piper when it's time to get a new release...this is kinda the way things are with auto NAV that is built in. It's a captive audience that is most likely to either pay for a map upgrade because they prefer the convenience of built-in NAV or is complacent and doesn't notice that things are out of date.
