navigation systems

I would like a comparison of the Garmin and Harmon Navigation systems if possible. I may be able to change from the new 430N RHB to the 730 RHR. The key difference to me could be the navigation system. Can anyone help me decide by differentiating these navigation systems? I would appreciate any comments. Thanks, Allen ps I am new to this forum and a new Jeep owner. What is WK2?

The garmin is a better nav, better software, provides more reliable directions (not always perfect, however). Garmin has been providing great systems for years where harmon systems have been judged mediocre by those that use GPS a lot. There seems to be other problems with the garmin equiped radio, however (blue tooth sync), that the new 730N doesn't seem to have, but if you want the best navigator, get the garmin. The garmin is typically more intuitive to use, but not by much.

It looks like Jeep is just using up the 430Ns on hand and moving completely to harmon systems. You can't seem to order a 430N in a overland anymore.

Not necessarily disagreeing, but doesn't the 730N have one advantage in that it has "dead reckoning"?

I thought the only real advantage to have dead reckoning is so that you cannot lose route guidance capabilities while traveling through tunnels, under thick cloud cover and cities densely populated with sky scrapers.

I have the 430n and have traveled through the I-395 tunnel in DC, I-895 tunnel in MD, Lincoln Tunnel and Manhattan (and all in stormy inclement weather at one time or another).

Never have I lost reception. Jeep is probably moving to Harmon because they are offering them a more competitive partnership deal than garmin is. Remember, gps nav is just another "part" and chrysler has the manufacturer's of those parts competing for chrysler's business. The big auto companies will always choose the lowest bidder. In this case it's most likely Harmon kardon.

Unfortunately, because of wiring differences, the 430 and 730 radios are not swappable.

The Garmin radios (mfd. by Mitsubishi) are not being discontinued, there was a recent supply shortage. They are scheduled to continue in the 2012 models.

Thank you for your comments on my first post. This is my first Jeep, and I love it. The dealership has been great. This forum seems pretty neat as well. I was not "tuned in" to all the Jeep enthusiast out there, but I can see why people like their jeeps! My Jeep came with the 430N (REB), but it was defective. The dealer offered to replace it with the 730N. In the interim, they put in a 430N (RHB) that worked. Last Friday, they got the 730N (RHR) and put it in. As mentioned above, there is a compatibility wiring problem, and I lost all voice communication with my phone, and radio. As of Friday, they were expecting Jeep to come out with an adapter cable to the microphone, or a software change to make the voice feature work. I thought the voice communication with the Harmon navigation system would be a significant plus, but is it worth waiting for? I would appreciate your thoughts. Thank you. Allen

The problem might be that on the 430N the mic connects to the uconnect module whereas on the 730N the mic should connect to the 730N because it has uconnect built in. Because of this, there is probably no reason why the 730n should connect to the external uconnect module. On my 07 Jeep, it originally did not not have voice control on the 730N. It was enabled by simply adding a mic to it.

Having used both, I like the Garmin better in every way EXCEPT the Garmin does not have traffic. I really like the traffic feature on the 730 and would have gotten the 730 had it been available when my Overland was built.

BTW, I think the voice feature on the Harmon is overrated, since setting a new nav point entailed having an extended conversation with my unit that never see,Ed to get it right. Of course I am sure it is just me!

I too am a huge fan of Garmin and so far my limited experiences with the Harmon in my 730N have been excruciatingly painful to say the least. That said would I be a complete tool if I bought the latest garmin nuvi with all the latest features and simply used the Garmin for nav/traffic etc an=d the 730N for radio/mp3/bluetooth phone etc? would I look like a complete fool having a portable mounted GPS on a 2012 overland with built in NAV??? I really think this would be the best of both worlds, opinions please, thanks

A lot of in dash nav systems are sub par, so many run with a portable unit. If a passerby notices, they will most likely not know the details and think you have a base radio without Nav. My 2009 base radio looks just like the nav radio except for the fine print.

My 730N nav locked up downtown NYC yesterday. Thank goodness for the iPad maps application or I would have had to go old school, and heaven forbid, ask for directions They only thing I found to reset the 730 was reseting the radio fuse.

I have to agree with ColdCase that a majority of the in-dash navi head units are sub par, especially last years models. This year, even Kenwood's 2012 HU are a step backwards with their Garmin based nav. For some reason, they did not ask for the latest software package from Garmin. The top of line portable Garmin nuvi units far exceed many of the in-dash units.

So far for the 2012 aftermarket in-dash model year, it seams that only navi units to give a serious look at, are those who use the IGO Primo Software http://igomyway.com/ Updating is easy by logging onto www.naviextras.com. Clarion, Alpine and even Jensen are just a few have switched or have been using their systems. The new Sony in-dash units look interesting, the second generation TomTom module ( Sony option XAV-100T) is due out this summer.

Clarion is coming out next month with an iPhone on dash controller called the NextGate, it has a 7 inch WVGA screen. You can integrate the Prodigy One system into the factory head unit or an aftermarket HU that uses an RGB plug that is compatible. Or simply get a cheap portable for now, and wait for the 2013 aftermarket HU.
