Navigation worth it?

Has anyone paid to get the navigation activated on their jeep and think it's worth having? Dealer wants $650 just to flip a switch

I specifically ordered mine without nav, because I don't think it is worth it. Have had nav on the last 4 or 5 vehicles and we never use it. The maps are quickly outdated, and it is a pain to use (must be in park). Add to that the fact that any smart phone does a much better job at navigation and I think it is an easy call.

Re: Navigation worth it?

I paid to have it activated because being the idiot I was I thought my Limited with lux 2 came with Navi but didn't so I learned my lesson. If u plan on using the navigation I think it's worth it because I like the big display on the 8.4" plus u also get the map and turns inside the instrument cluster. Most cellphones have better Navigation though and much more accurate POI than the ones that are in my Jeep.

Re: Navigation worth it?

My used 2011 came with it already activated. I have a flip phone (I know, I know) so no Nav over the phone. So far the only time I've used it was to hit the Guide Me Home button after I missed a turn off in Atlanta, but that was the first time I'd been to a big city in years. I live out in Boondock, AL. I used gas station maps up until I got this technological marvel of a Jeep about five weeks ago. My last truck had AM/FM/Cassette as the electronic package so I'm still freaking out over all the buttons and having my truck talk to me. It's a little unnerving.

Re: Navigation worth it?

My Jeep came with it and I do like the large screen display, and as the other poster said as you get close to a turn it shows up in your instrument cluster. It's also good to just keep on so you can see how the road turns ahead or what's coming up. You can also set destination while vehicle is moving via voice commands. I use waze with my phone which gives real time updates traffic, police, vehicle on shoulder, accidents etc. I sometimes use waze and the Jeep nav together.

To answer your question I wouldn't get a vehicle without the nav system and I would activate it. I did read somewhere the difference with your nav and the one that's already installed is that when you are in major city the nav that's activated won't show the buildings and landmarks in 3d. If I'm wrong someone can jump in and correct me!

If the GC comes with nav it is a different radio (more memory and processor). This allows for 3d mapping, hd radio, and a few other bits. If you activate it later, you don't get the 3d or hd radio.

Re: Navigation worth it?

so pretty much it doesn't seem worth it with maps being outdated as well as 3d maps not available

Navigation worth it?

Yea just use Waze anyway so much better I swapped to an RA4 for 3D maps and it's only in certain cities. Regardless u can't beat the real time traffic from waze so I pretty much wasted 1,000 bucks on the factory nav since I never use it anymore

I don't think so. To get new maps they want $2-300, so it is never worth updating....

Re: Navigation worth it?

I've used mine from Bar Harbor Maine to South Everglades FL and it has never let me down. It has correctly taken me many offbeat places that I would have never found without it. The good it has done has far outstripped the few errors or roads it couldn't find. Can always use your phone, but it's a lot better to see where you are going on the big screen and use your phone for other functions.
Also a chance in remote spots that you will not have phone service.. then what?? Never had not had NAV service....

Re: Navigation worth it?

Well from what I'm reading from you guys, it seems if I did get it activated I wouldn't get 3D maps or better voice recognition. I don't really care for the voice but I live in New York City so 3D maps would be a big plus. Did anyone get it activated on theirs and live in an urban city? Is it just 2d maps the whole way through?

Perhaps it really depends on where you live. I live in Idaho, and the nav in my Ram, previous GC, and Vw are the exact opposite - wildly inaccurate. They only cover the major highways and rough approximations of everything else. When I park at work it always thinks I am in the middle of a pond that is about a 1/4 mil away. Now you can argue that we are in a rural state and thus demand is lower, but I don't get errors like that from Google/Apple maps. I guess at the end of the day I can't rationalize paying money for an inferior product to what I can get for free.
