Need to tap into battery, tips on what to use?

Looking to install my ham radio and need to tap to battery for power. The posts are not the same as my old vehicle. Any tips on what I can get locally to tap into the battery.

Re: Need to tap into battery, tips on what to use?

For an entirely different application, I used (from memory) a 10mm eyelet on the positive battery clamp bolt, and an 8mm on the negative.

Using the battery clamp's clamping bolt/nut is not ideal, but there's not a lot of room around the positive terminal, and the negative terminal appears special and I don't think can be changed out.

Cheers,
Steve

Re: Need to tap into battery, tips on what to use?

Thanks, after looking at some pics online it does look like the negative side is a little bit different than the positive side. I was looking from the rear passenger side earlier today which lead me to think the post connectors were the same on both sides.

Here's one pics I found online. AUSJEEPOFFROAD.COM - AJOR - View Single Post - Grand Cherokee wk2 Second Battery I'm not needing a heavy gauge wire so I think I would be able do the same thing you did. Thanks again for the input.

Re: Need to tap into battery, tips on what to use?

Why do you need to go direct to Battery? Do you need switched power.
It's very easy to Tap the back of the cigarette lighter below the Radio which is switched. I think the one in the center console is not switched.

Re: Need to tap into battery, tips on what to use?

Got it done yesterday, had to get some bigger ring terminals from the local auto supply store. For the + side, I was able to slip a spade terminal connector under the nut. For the negative side, I put a ring terminal connector on one side of the hold down retainer bolt.

I had to wire directly to the battery due to this excerpt from the manual:
To minimize voltage drop and avoid blowing the vehicle's fuses, connect the supplied DC power cable directly to the battery terminals.

Re: Need to tap into battery, tips on what to use?

For high power radios as used by Amateurs, especially HF, anything other than direct battery connection will almost definitely result in problems.

Cheers,
Steve
