New fronts (focal 1ss-690)

Jeep: Focal ISS 690 vs Original | Ultra Auto Sound

above is a link to some pics from the shop that installed my new fronts. I found the sound a bit muddy and lacked bit in the middle, original plan was a set of focal coaxials but they were discontinued so we went for components instead. I retained the stock tweeters and we ran the focal tweeters of the same signal.

Sounds much better, more bass, much more mid and moves the soundstage down a bit so less separation. If in the toronto area, give these guys a try, they are reasonably priced, fast and will work with you on your needs (were totally fine when I didn't want to cut holes in the door panel for the tweeter).

Re: New fronts (focal 1ss-690)

Thanks for the review. I assume you have the OE Alpine? When you say you "retained" the stock tweets, is there still sound coming from them? Or are they simply there to provide the signal to the Focal tweets? I would think it would be quite bright if you had that many tweets active? Also, you'd have a lower impedance load on the OE amp, and that may not be good over time.

What/how to they have that tweeter mounted? Did it come with a bracket to mount it near the center of the woofer cone?

I initially tried swapping in mids/tweets in my Ram (same horrible Alpine system), and it did not produce any desirable results. My standard is quite high though -- coming from a Lincoln THXII system (night a day difference between it and Chrysler Alpine). My Jeep is still mostly stock except for center channel. My wife drives it, and she does not care. There's now a huge difference between it and my Ram (same 430N source).

Re: New fronts (focal 1ss-690)

The sound is a little bit brighter but I really wanted to bring the stage down, I tweaked the treble down 2 notches but it's not harsh.

I do have the factory alpine, not really concerned with the impedance, the energy in the tweets is low and the resistance tends to increase there anyway (need to ask the shop if they wired series or parallel).

Looks like the had a little cantilever mount for tweets, not sure if it was in the box. I am no audiophile, cost is always a factor, but the accuracy of the mid range is much better which just stops it sounding so hollow.

Re: New fronts (focal 1ss-690)

Good deal. Thanks again. I've read of other dropping in components, and improving sound. The Jeep was slightly better then my Ram from stock. Ram had (3) 3.5" dash speakers as tweets + center. It was real bright bouncing off windshield. Jeep has better imaging with the 1" tweets angle in the sail panels. I
