Pic Request: 7" double din aftermarket head unit?

Considering upgrade to factory head unit for my 2012. Found only a few threads, but are either older or not quite what I'm looking for. Anyone out there have installed pics of their full-screen 7" head unit, something similar to the AVIC 8000NEX?

Thanks- Jason

Greetings,

This is close to the AViC-8000 since the AVIC-8000 is based upon the AppRadio 3 as well. You are looking at a capacitive screen also.

Best for now.

Re: Pic Request: 7" double din aftermarket head unit?

That's great, thanks. A bit hard to tell with the lighting, but how do the plastics match for the adapter vs factory dash? I actually like the look of the metal button panel beneath too. I'm really looking for a factory fitment and finish bc I don't want it to look hacked together.

Looks like you and Rage are some of the more active members for A/V so maybe I can pick your brain. i actually have an srt with the hk speakers but asked for feedback here since there's not much action for audio on the srt side. I'm happy with the speakers but looking for more functionality out of the head unit. Priorities are HD radio, streaming Pandora, and Bluetooth phone calls. I could care less about the nav function since I'm a Waze junky. How is the app radio for these? Sounds like Waze is an issue and doesn't play nice with appradio since I have an iPhone 6? Or has that been resolved? Do I need to do anything beyond the maestro to retain all my factory hk speakers and amps? And finally, can I somehow tap into the factory mic so I don't have to run another one from the aftermarket HU? Thanks for the help- sorry for the long message.

Re: Pic Request: 7" double din aftermarket head unit?

Greetings,

The match is very good, hard to tell it is aftermarket HU.

I had Waze running on it, with the iPhone 5S with no problems in the App Mode. With the iPhone 6, I have lost track with it since I am researching a headunit for CarPlay. My favorite GPS app as of now is SYGIC, which in my version does not support AppRadio. However, I run it as a mirror application with no problems.

I suggest also looking into the Kenwood Excelon series as well. Also a clean fit.
Both the Pioneer and Kenwood have excellent bluetooth clarity. I think Kenwood's functionality of the bluetooth handles better. Not sure about the mike with the connection of iDatalink. Call them, they are very friendly.

If you have not yet come across this thread, great comments on the pros & cons of the HK:

From the horses mouth on the Harman Kardon System

Best for now.

Re: Pic Request: 7" double din aftermarket head unit?

Awesome, thanks. That thread is interesting, though it seems mostly centered around whether people actually like the system. I have no problems with the speakers, just looking for a little more out of the HU.

I'm going to look for a local shop where I can hopefully test out some of these units in person, but thoughts on the capacitive screen? Just seems like its worth it for a small increase in price over the lower models, but not sure if it's overkill given recent improvements in the traditional touch screens?

Re: Pic Request: 7" double din aftermarket head unit?

Greetings,

Anytime.

I am actually looking to change out my headunit. I only selected the AppRadio as a temporary measure until I really like something. I thought this year their would be something interesting. It looks like the Parrot RB6 fall into that category with introduction of the HD 720p Screen. Based on this, I think I am going to wait until next year. My feeling is that HD screens will show up more in the aftermarket world especially now that both car manufactures are also including them.

In any event, a new headunit in your system will give the system more spark in terms of sound performance. As for integration, you should have more freedom for your apps.

Best for now.

Bringing this back from the dead...

Zoso77 - What hu did you end up going with?

1stJeepGC - Did you end up replacing your AppRadio 3 yet?

I'm looking at replacing my hu in my 2012 and was thinking about ditching nav since I usually use Waze on my iPhone 5. Looking at the new Kenwood Excelon DDX9903S or Pioneer AVH-4200NEX.

Any thoughts on these two hu or other suggestions?

Greetings,

I am still using the AppRadio 3 and holding out until CarPlay has the 3rd party navi apps or until all apps run into trouble with the old windows based os in the unit. June is coming up very quickly and I want to see what Apple does with next IOS version for CarPlay. Apple maps is not bad at all, but it not up too matching Google Maps at present. Personally, I am enjoy the off-line navi's.

I prefer the Kenwood first and then the Pioneer with regards to your selections. The kenwood does have the better sound quality.

The other thing I am considering is going to a built-in GPS headunit with CarPlay. I am exploring right now the multitasking between the GPS and the apps. Then when my favorite, Sygic, comes to CarPlay, I can than use CarPlay 100%. Plus, I have another GPS to fall back on.

Best for now.

Re: Pic Request: 7" double din aftermarket head unit?

Greetings,

I did why back when during my early design stages. Carrying the iPad around was the reason that I finally decided against it. Even with iPad Mini you simply can not put into your pocket.

Best for now.

Alright, as I near closer to purchasing a Pioneer AVIC system I do have a few questions I didn't find answers to. With the install (and correct adapters) were you able to still use the phone/other steering wheel controls with this unit (not just volume control)? How about the USB port in the arm rest? OEM mic located near the sunroof controls? Does the unit dim when the headlights turn on?

Weird questions maybe, but I think it's super valued info for those of us looking at the closest to OEM functionality, with the added features like CarPlay, etc.

Thank you!
