Playing music through center console USB port

I'm having a hell of a time getting music to play from a device through the center console USB port.

I've tried:

1. iPhone 4 (not surprised this one didn't work, actually)
2. iPhone Nano 6th generation (the newest one)

For each of these devices, the same thing happend. The "reading" message displayed on the radio for about a minute, followed by a generic "An Error Occurred" message. The result was no music indexing, and no ability to play music from a USB-connected device.

Has anyone else had this same issue? Have you been successful in playing music through the center console USB port? If so, what device did you use?

I have the RHB (Garmin nav) radio.

Any help would be appreciated! This USB port has been VERY frustrating.

I was not successful the first few tries...but then I tried a differnt Ipod. If you hit the aux tab then look for the device tab - let it read completely - it has to index all the songs on the Ipod. then it will play and you can control it with the radio controls. Good luck! Be patient!

I have the same issue now although it was playing initially for the first few days. I also have a problem where the the songs speed up during Bluetooth streaming. I have the MC 430( no GPS).

Kept trying with no success... then the last time I tried the Nano, it worked! No clue why, but hopefully it will keep on working. The Voice Command of music is why I waited for the 430N vs. the 730N. It recognized every song, artist, or album I threw at it. Very impressive!

It supposedly supports album art too, but haven't seen that appear yet. Have you had any luck getting album art to appear?

A quick question on Ipod playback... Does it navigate in the same way an Ipod does by breaking an artist's catalog down by album and allowing you to listen sequentially rather than alphabetically ie.. Artist->Album->Song, or does it give you a big list of songs for each artist? I'm curious about the 430 model on the Laredo X specifically.

If you choose to play by artist, and you have multiple albums by the same artist, the songs don't seem to be listed in any logical order. It doesn't seem to be sequential or alphabetical.

Not sure about the album art - I know it shows up when I put an actual CD in the bay. the list can be soprted by album, artist ot genre. This is cool, you can also set an artist favorite and when that artist has a song playing on any station it will give you an alert. Same with sports teams......if a game is being broadcast or there is a score change you can get alerts even if you are not listening to that channel! This is so fun - love it!

So to clarify, if I want to listen to the Beatles and I select them under artist I don't have the option to select Abbey Road or the White Album? It's just going to display a random assortment of songs? This seems like a pretty huge drawback for Ipod use. I have several artist's entire catalog comprising over 150 songs and over 30 gigs total. Even a $30 wal mart mp3 player can navigate artist-->album as well as every aftermarket receiver I've seen. How do others deal with this shortfall? Is the harddrive any better?

I'll check mine later today. I have the 430 in a Laredo X. I use my original video ipod and the hard drive. I think if I recall correctly you can search by Artist or by Album but not subsort albums by a specific artist. I know that sounds confusing but it's not that bad. I know that when I do voice searches if I say "play, Artist, Aerosmith" it will generate a list of all Aerosmith songs. If I say "play, Almum, Rock in a hard place" it will just list out those songs.

But the second submenu is either Artist, Album, Genre, or Song. You can't refine those subsets any more.

It worked this morning. If you select an Artist, it will then display a submenu that lists each album you have by that artist. You can also choose ALL ALBUMS. If you choose that, it will then list all songs by that Artist (in an order that seems random).

I had this initial problem too. I had an old IPOD 4 Gig nano that wouldn't be recognized while I was at the dealer. Went home, upgraded the unit's software through itunes and it worked finally. Hopefully this helps. Problem I had was went out got a 160 Gig classic, put 20,000+ songs on it, it only recognized 4000 songs. Don't know why.

Drove to Chicago and back, and couldn't get the iPod connection through USB working at all. I need to figure out how I got it working before... seemed to just randomly work. Very, very annoying.

I just ordered a Laredo X with the 430N. My build date is 10/11/2010. My dealer could not answer the following questions:

1) Will the 430N support iPod control?
2) Will the 430N have the USB port on the face of the radio or underneath the center stack in the "storage bin" just in front of the shifter
3) If the 430N does not have the USB port underneath the center stack, will the iPod control still work on the face of the radio
4) Does the Garmin Nav have any real time traffic capability.

He did confirm they now can build Laredo X packages with the dual panoramic sunroof; unfortunately my order is too far down the path to change.

What OS do you have on your 3GS? 4.0 or later?

It seems the USB port doesn't like iOS devices with OS 4.0 or later, or the latest iPod nano.

I've been meaning to borrow an older generation nano to see if it works better, then may have to do a swap.

Withe the Bluetooth streaming, it seems you can just fast forward, rewind, play, and pause. It just plays the song your iPod is currently on. The sound quality is ok, not great.

Great posts / replies everyone, thank you. This is great news as it was not what my dealer had told me on the iPod control.

As for the traffic, that is disappointing. Will this be fixed with a firmware / software upgrade? It would seem this should be a plug and play service through Sirius / XM or something?

Traffic - no.

Travel Link - yes.
