Possible Garmin Navigation update method for the 8.4 UConnect systems

Not tested. Not endorsed. From another forum.

HOW TO: Update your Garmin Maps in UConnect 8.4N RB5

here's a blurb on page 4 of that thread that caught my attention

Quote:
now I have the 2014.40 maps on my car with RED light and speed camera warnings with full version large view Junction files ( the part of the map where it shows you the next intersection if you are navigating.
I am sure somebody here would be brave enough to try...

Re: Possible Garmin Navigation update method for the 8.4 UConnect systems

I am not saying this might not work and I am even interested in trying.

However ONE work of caution, the 8.4 Radios in the Dart share almost nothing with the Jeeps other then the size. They are not built by the same people and don't run the same software. Again, this may work but Journey's and Darts are not Harmon.

the Dart Uconnect models are Harman Kardon as well, now this should work cross Chrysler brands as long as it is a Garmin GPS unit running CTP2012/2012.5/13.

The question is how to check it ....

Regards.

I dont think its an HK.. that post says "I think it is".... all the HK's use the same software and look similar except for the background images. The darts interface is different.

You are correct, the RE and RB Series Radios in the Dodge Product are Magneti Marelli and they are NOT running the same software at all nor are they a Harmon Product.

As for the Garmin side, I don't know, there is no reference to CTP in any of the model cataloging that I have for the RA (Harmon NAFTA) equipment. They are referred to as a group as VP4.

Re: Possible Garmin Navigation update method for the 8.4 UConnect systems

I have been looking for method to load trip routes to the UConnect Nav since I got the WK2, but have found nothing. I had been using Garmin software to load to my separate Garmin GPS. as it is a real pain to program long routes on the nav in car. The closest I have come is a feature of MapQuest that allows creation of a driving route and the upload to a car unit. Unfortunately the Jeeps is not included, only OnStar and Fords Sync are listed. Does anyone know where to suggest a new feature for the Nav system?

Screen capture of how easy it could be if somehow Chrysler could be added to that list.

I don't have an answer on this one, other than that list is getting smaller. Ford Canceled SYNC to go with a system similar to Chrysler.

Not sure if the Garmin trip map might be supported in the future though?

Not sure of it getting smaller as there still quite a few Sync systems running around. I had not seen anything about a Ford switch, nothing on BON.

Would be very nice if Garmin maps were supported, if only from a memory card.

Thanks for the link, this stuff is a bit more complex than just a plain GPS. I found a site, allpar, that helps explain it for me. Also found info on the UConnect site that shows the UConnect with a Garmin screen and some info about it.

Ford is opening up its applink system to the app development community. See here: https://gigaom.com/2013/01/10/forget...-car-hardware/

I really wish Chrysler/fiat would go the same route but it doesn't look likely. Or even go with the open automotive Alliance. The days of proprietary in car app systems like unconnect are on the way out, and someone needs to tell Chrysler. Companies like pandora are frankly tired of rewriting their app 100s of times for all these different standards and closed APIs.

Re: Possible Garmin Navigation update method for the 8.4 UConnect systems

So is it safe to say there is no map system update for the UConnect?
There I was in my 14 JGC in the bush and the maps were useless. Some roads were marked and some not marked. No topography marked and I needed to have a second Garmin GPS with the Garmin Topo Maps on it.

The JGC is sold as an off road, 4x4, go anywhere vehicle but has no map choices to make a formal upgrade to topo maps. I would have paid for that when I bought the car if it were available.

Are you listening, Jeep???

Cheers
