DISCUSSION:
All MY13-16 vehicles sold in the U.S. with the RA3 or RA4 radio can now receive software
updates “over-the-air”. Updates to software level 17.11.07 will occur in a phased roll-out.
The software is updated through the built-in cellular modem in the radio which is
connected to the Sprint® 3G network. Customers will see a notification on their radio
screen when new software is available for their radio (Fig. 1). The owner will have the
option to update the radio or schedule the update for later. There is not an option to
decline the update indefinitely. The update must be performed.

I had no problems with my 2017 Grand Cherokee Limited with the 8.4 NAV system, but like you said, there was no way do decline the update. I put it off for 2 days and then let it do its thing. It all worked well, as I did not lose my ANDROID phone pairing and Radio presets. I was already able to drag and drop icons on the screen. However, I noticed that on my other screen over the steering wheel, the MPG indication went to KM/L. I had to go into system/controls/units on the NAV screen and select US Gallons. I thought that was weird. Thanks for the start of this thread :)

Out where I live (central NY) updating maps "over the air" would probably take a week or more. In my driveway, I have only a 1X connection, and have to drive a short distance away to get a 3G. I was told that UConnect uses Sprint, which is lousy in my area. Now, if there was a way to download maps through one's cell phone (or home Wi-Fi while parked in the driveway), that would be great.

I'd rather do the update myself with a usb drive. I don't like being distracted with something like this when I'm on the road. I know you can put it off, but for how long. I don't see the update available on the Uconnect update site. Hope it will soon be available there.

Last step of the TSB says:

"Station presets, Bluetooth phone pairings and other preferences may need to be set again."

Well that is bull crap. I don't want to have to be re-pairing phones and searching for my favorite stations every time they decide to do a software update to my working perfectly well radio. That is the only good thing I have had to say about their updates....they never lost my Bluetooth and presets because they saved them off to the USB stick and restored them.

If my wife is gone somewhere and an update runs and her phone no longer works and the '60s disappears from her presets.........she is going to be pissed.

Was thinking the same thing.

They will likely have an update available shortly after the over the air one rolls out but could get annoying if they send out updates too often. Maybe they can turn off this "feature".

Considering that the TSB is dated Friday and today is Sunday, I seriously doubt that they have even started distribution yet. It will probably be while I'm in Utah trying to negotiate some difficult trail next month.

I have the feeling this is going to turn into a cluster f*** for many of us. Too many things can go wrong with an update, and doing it by 3g cell while on the road seems like they're asking for problems.

I am concerned that if it happens while I'm on my trip, it will either screw up the Customtronix software installation or will force me to uninstall it with no way to reinstall it. I want my front camera for off-roading and the ability for my wife to mess with the GPS screen while driving is really nice. Hopefully, the "later" option will allow me to later it until I get back home if that happens.

Since it's suppose to come over the air via Sprint, do you need to pay for the connection?

the aircard is always on no matter what, several folks in the biz have tried to no avail to truly shut down the connection...I have no Uconnect subcription much less a Sprint/wifi subscription and I still get regular VHR's with my exact accurate and current mileage...big brother is always watching, true privacy no longer exists, just the illusion of it...all that said, they still could require a subscription to get updates for out of warranty folk....

Why wouldn't the 2017's get the update?

My software version is 16.23.21 and some of the 'improvements' would be of interest to me (if in fact they are improvements).

Nothing on driveuconnect.com/software-update/ yet. Guess I will have to keep checking back there.

Remember the old saying "if it ain't broke....." My 2014 is broke as it won't keep the correct time and randomly displays "Phone requires service" for no apparent reason. Are you having any of these or other problems with your 2017? My mother and father-in-law have a 2017 75th Anniversary Limited and never complain of any radio or clock/navigation issues.

If your vehicle is equipped with Uconnect Access connected services, featuring a built-in cellular connection, you may receive Over-the-Air Software Updates. The vehicle must be located in the US and in range of a useable cellular network. The following vehicles offer Uconnect Access on the 8.4-inch systems:

2015-17 Chrysler 200
2015-16 Chrysler 300
2017 Chrysler Pacifica
2015-16 Dodge Challenger
2015-16 Dodge Charger
2014-17 Dodge Durango
2013-17 Dodge Viper
2014-17 Jeep Cherokee
2014-17 Jeep Grand Cherokee
2015-17 Jeep Renegade (Uconnect 6.5)
2013-17 Ram 1500
2013-17 Ram 2500/3500/Chassis Cab

Note: The 2017 Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, Challenger and the 2017 Jeep Compass will not receive this over-the-air software update.

I'm pretty sure that if you have an 8.4A or AN, you have cell service. Whether you have a phone paired with the system is irrelevant.

"Adds Apple Siri® Eyes Free capability for iPhone® owners."
Hasn't Siri Eyes Free been part of the system since early last year?

FCA's decision to exclude a cellular modem in export versions of the vehicle means that moving forward they will have to release a separate USB update just for those vehicles (Canadian vehicles for example).

Many features of the U-connect system are not available to customers outside of the US because of the lack of a data connection. I have never understood why FCA didn't allow people to utilize the data connection in their phone (via bluetooth) to drive the "connected features" of the vehicle. Seems VERY short sighted to me.

The TSB was just dated four days ago. I suspect they may be getting the TSB distributed before distributing the update. I would think next month at the earliest for it to appear.

#41 ·
Wouldn't be surprised if that's the case. I just hope they leave me alone until I get back from Utah in the middle of May.

I thinking in the future you will have to be subscribed to Uconnect to receive any of these updates. When I spoke to Jeep Customer Care(last November) about my clock and other radio problems I emphasized to the rep. about wanting to get this fixed asap since my warranty is up July 2017. He stated "I should be fine with Warranty since the fix update was due out last December now. Once 3yr/36,000 is up the dealer won't help us with any updates unless we pay $. Not sure with extended Warranty.

I would guess (just a guess) they would figure a way to download the necessary file(s) in the background while there is a decent cell connection making sure the crc checksum matches when the file is fully downloaded. After that the option to install the update would prompt on the head unit. This is just a guess because I'm not sure the ra3/ra4 headunits have enough memory to hold the file to do an extract and install.

I can't wait to see this disaster. After reading the Tsb, I've been monitoring the signal strength for the 3G on my radio screen. I get little to no bars showing in my neighborhood. Nothing in my driveway.
