RA3 Factory Radio and 6 Speaker Audio Improvement Help

I purchased a 2015 JGC Limited and it came equipped with the RA3 factory radio and 6 speaker system. Does anyone know if you can simply add the Alpine 506 Watt Amp? It looks like the intended location for the amp is in the rear drivers side quarter panel opposite of where the subwoofer would go. Does anyone know if wires were already ran to this location for an easy plug and play dealer upgrade or am I out of luck?

The current setup is hands down the worst sounding factory radio setup I've heard in some time. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Replace your OE speakers with the Focal 6x9" component set for the front doors, and the Focal co-axial 6.75" speakers for the rear doors. Unless you need ear drum puncturing bass, this will suffice, with no amp needed.....

Do you have the model # for each speaker set? Typical factory speakers have higher impedance than aftermarket so the sound quality will be worse. Thanks again!

As it turns out, the impedance of the factory speakers and the Focal speakers are pretty much the same, at 4 ohms, except for the factory tweeters, which I measured at 5 ohms. The Focal speakers I installed are the ISC 165s in the rear doors, and the ISS 690 component set, in the front doors.

Where the Focal speakers differ greatly from the OE speakers, beside overall quality and materials, is in their efficiency. The Focals are among the most efficient car speakers out there, so they don't need a huge amount of power to sound really good.

FYI even the upgraded alpine sound system sucks. If it weren't for some internal factory settings on the system which I don't want to mess with I would have changed to Focal speakers.

Re: RA3 Factory Radio and 6 Speaker Audio Improvement Help

Let us know how it turns out. The reviews on crutchfield and in other postings in the forum are generally positive. The only real complaint is that the component tweeters are "bright". My assumption is that means a bit overpowering in comparison with the other speakers?

I initially thought they were a little bright, but then it was in comparison to the OE tweets, which probably aren't all the good. HOWEVER, when I first installed my Focals, I was under the misconception that the factory HU was also serving as an x-over, so I didn't install the Focal supplied x-overs.

After kicking it around with a couple of others, on this website, I took my front door panels off a second time, after the winter weather faded off into the sunset, and installed the Focal x-overs. There are two of them, one for the mid-woofers, and one for the tweets. The difference in sound was indeed noticeable, and I'm glad that I took the time to do this. It takes a little extra effort, but don't skip this step............

RA3 Factory Radio and 6 Speaker Audio Improvement Help

We have 2016 JGC 75th Limited with 6 speaker system.

The Jeep.com website to this day lists the 9 amplified speakers with sub woofer in the 'standard equipment' list. So that is what we believed it would come with.

When it arrived it had the 6 speakers only, no center speaker, no rear speakers and no sub. It was disappointing. The sales person checked out the website and confirmed that indeed 9 amplified speakers with sub is listed in standard equipment list. He said he'd inquire with corporate and see what could be done.

If we had known that the 9 speaker system was a 'misprint', we would have added the audio upgrade option which we learned later was $495

So we are wanting to know....
Is the existing wiring harness able to accommodate the additional components?
Does the HU need an update to 'know' about the surround sound feature?
Are there wires for the rear speakers just laying behind the trim...which would need to be swapped out?
Are there wires for the center speaker in the dash...which also requires trim change?
Are there wires and power for the amplifier behind left rear wheel well?
Are there wires for the sub woofer...more trim to change out?

So, is it practical to have dealer install the 9 speakers, amplifier and sub? I'm thinking a lot could go 'wrong' unless it is merely a plug and play procedure to upgrade from 6 to 9.1 audio system.

Perhaps there was a change to the 6 speaker setup or the HU processing from 2015 to 2016 because we find the sound quality decent. We are leaning on leaving it be. Thoughts?

Like you, I found the sound quality in my 2015 Limited, with the 6 speaker system, "decent". I upgraded the speakers to the Focals, mentioned earlier in this thread. Now the sound is "really decent". No, the bass isn't earth shattering, because there isn't a subwoofer in the system, but it's still pretty good. I listen primarily to classic rock, which doesn't have the deep, synthesized bass of the 90s and later music, so it isn't a problem for me. That's not to say, however, that the Focals won't provide good bass response. They just can't go down into the sub 40Hz range.

Thanks all for replies.
Any definitive answer on whether or not the existing 6 speaker wiring harnesses are equipped to handle the 9 speaker setup?
