Radio install help!

Hello, I know this is probably a regular topic around here but I'm a new member so figured to kick off with a post. I just picked up a 2011 Laredo and putting in an aftermarket 2DIN Android head unit in. I have the Metra brackets and the PAC wire harness and antenna adapter, so i just need suggestions with the fitting of the radio. I used to install radios for years so I'm familiar with most of this. My main question for all you guys swapping factory for aftermarket is are you trimming around the actual dash or are you just trimming the sub-dash? If I mount the brackets to the unit and have the side tabs flush with the radio, it definitely wont fit without more trimming. If i recess the radio back into the dash, it will work but then the side tabs stick out way too far and can almost see the gaps. The sizing of this unit my be a bit off from other units because I had to trim the Metra brackets already too. The one thing I'm trying to avoid is starting to trim the main dash piece.IMG_2438.JPG

Re: Radio install help!

your problem is common. Its "you have professional parts, and flea market product"..
your Dbl Din unit is not from a main manufacturer that supports EIA wiring and sizes, but your kit is.

your choices are.
Get a name brand radio.
Cur your expensive dash and deal with the "Best you can" look.

I install professionally, as my job. I see it all the time. I guarantee, if you get a Kenwood, Pioneer, Sony, JVC, Clarion or Eclipse radio you wont have a problem.

you will probably also have to cut out/remove the metal bracket that was supporting your factory radio. (behind the dash/ behind the fact radio)

Re: Radio install help!

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to avoid trimming the dash because the margin of error is too close with that piece. I think i'm going to recess the unit a little and modify the side brackets before swapping to a different unit. The annoying part is that the radio measures to a standard double DIN size of 100mm height but the dash opening is more like 95-96mm.
