Rear door speaker advice

First off, thanks to everyone who has posted on here, there are some great contributors and it really answers a lot of questions. This weekend I upgraded my front speakers to Image Dynamics XS tweeters and 6x9's. I didn't mess with the rears, however after playing with the EQ and fader for a day now, I'm unhappy with how it changed the overall sound. (my ID's are 4ohm and there's been debate on here if the Alpine 6x9's are 2 or 4 ohm). I see most people putting 6.5 coax's in the rear but ID doesn't make them in the same XS series.

Would you recommend I stick with the higher end XS 6.5's since they match the fronts, or would I be better off with the CTX coax for half the price but a little less efficient (2db)? I'm sure I am overthinking this but would appreciate anyone's advice. Thanks!

Greetings and welcome,

To begin with, do you have the standard or the Alpine system, which head unit is in your JGC and finally, what level of sound fidelity do you prefer?

As a rule of thumb, it is better to match speakers with the same in order for the speaker characteristics to be equal. This comes in play with the midrange and tweeter frequencies. This is specially true when you are in close quarters.

Therefore, in your case, since, it is the same speaker company and they use the same silk tweeter it does not matter that much. The CTX, the tweeter location is will be by your knees and with the XS, you can place the tweeter to your liking. The next difference between them is the XS uses the better passive crossover, thus another reason it cost more.

If you do have the Alpine system, as you have read in this forum, most solutions requires an upgrade that could potential see yourself spending $$$, yes bucks to correct the problem. It boils down to your level of sound appreciation. For example, for me, as an audiophile, I need the right components for that sound I like.

After you change the rear door, and the sound is still not to your liking. The next solution is to change out the stock head unit to an aftermarket. The stock head units are nothing to write home about. The 430 series is nothing but bad and the 730 is better, but below the quality of the aftermarket head units.

Best for now.

Re: Rear door speaker advice

Thanks for the reply. I just ordered the XS's. $300 but I love the sound of the fronts so I may as well have them matching. If i want to add a rear door tweeter for some odd reason later I can always pick them up. Right now I'm using the Alpine premium system (with 730) and it sounds decent. Lots of other engine and exterior upgrades I want to do before going all out but at least I'll have the speakers which can handle more power already taken care of. I did this for a living 15 years ago and it's starting to come back to me, which could be a bad (and expensive) thing if I don't know when to stop.

Re: Rear door speaker advice

Greetings,

Your welcome.

Just remember, you are dealing with a 7.1 surround sound DSP built into the factory amp. This will effect the passive crossovers. Take some time to play with the passive crossover hookup and with out.

Yes, you are correct, when do you stop. For me, still putting things together slowly. I am hoping sometime late July for the install, need more $$$. But when it is done, it will be worth every penny.

Best for now.
