Rear View Camera in Laredo?

I just ordered a 2014 Laredo with the 18" wheel and 8.4" stereo setup. I am really disappointed in Chrysler for not including a rear view camera in this trim level...even my wife's Base model CR-V has one and its $13k less expensive than my Jeep. Sorry, done bitching!

I opted for the larger stereo as I am planning to add some in-line processing and new speakers, amps, subs, etc. I will post all the details as I proceed. Does anyone know if the 8.4" in the Laredo has an input jack for the rear view camera like the one on the Limited would have? I know this would still take some significant work to setup a camera, but wasn't sure if the two units were similar enough that it would include this??

I am in the same situation as you, I have the 2014 Laredo E with the 8.4 and 18" wheel package. Your only option is to install the new Lockpic C8. I pulled out the 8.4 screen to take a look behind and found no jack for a camera.

Just curious what processor do you plan on using to process the factory audio signal? I went for the Audison Bit Ten. I plan on installing it next weekend. You really should to use a distortion detector, like a DD1 to see where the factory head unit clips the signal. Let me know how your install goes.

Thanks Vant4ge.... I am going to have to do some more research on the Lockpik product as I have never seen that before. Have you used one or do you know anyone who has that could give me some more information?

Regarding the rest of the system, I have a lot of experience with the JL Audio CleanSweep product line in the past with great success. I used it for a 2008 Camry, a 2009 Mazda with a Bose system and a 2011 Kia with a UVO/Infinity system. The nice thing about the CL-441 is that it automatically sets itself based on the factory crossovers and flattens the entire signal. You can then run RCA's out from the unit to a set of amps. My best system with this was in the Camry... I had a CL-441 with 9-conductor wire and factory harnesses behind the head unit. The CL-SSI merges the signals into a full range feed. From the CL-441 I usually run a 5 channel amp like the Alpine PDX by used a CL-RLC adapter for the 5th channel which enables separate sub control. A setup like this ends up being like a $500 addition beyond amps and speakers and all, but the quality of the sound when using these products is AWESOME!

Not so fast Vant4ge....the RA4 radio mentioned is only in the Limited and up (according to www.wk2jeeps.com at least) which states that the Laredo has an RA3. I am guessing the differences may include the jack for the camera, but please JeepGuy tell me Im wrong and please tell how you did yours so we can get this all figured out?!?!?

I apologize if linking another forum is in violation of the rules. It's not a Jeep forum. My thread is here.

What I did was visit Tech Authority and open it up in two different browsers (not windows, but browsers). Open it in IE and Chrome. In one browser, enter your VIN. In the other browser, just select a generic vehicle with any trim level that can option out a backup camera. I just chose a fully loaded model. Compare the wiring schematics and connector details of the two Jeeps, and determine what, if any, wires you're missing.

Once you've figured out the missing wires, you'll have to install the wires. Then install the OEM camera hardware. Lastly, have the BCM flashed to recognize the new camera. Flashing the BCM will add the options to your radio automatically.

I designed it based on my research of the missing wires. If the 2013 Jeep has the same radio and electronics, you can assume the wires are about the same.

You'll want to look at your Jeep to verify anything you find online anyways.
I probably should use PM for this, but think this is good public information. I am trying to understand this before I actually even take delivery of my GC and will surely have a better idea once I have started pulling it apart and looking....

That said, I am trying to understand how the Ram install and the GC "may" relate. It seems to me the wiring harness replacement on the tailgate is probably similar (if not the same piece) to the one in the tail of the GC. I would expect to see a very similar set of wires/pins/clips. I am guessing there is not any sort of wiring block the way the mid-chassis connector is on the Ram.
Regarding the wires you used and how you marked them... The Green, Blue and White wires seem to be from the radio to the connector in the footwell (if that is the same placement on the GC). Are the wires from there already in place or did you have to install wires from there to the chassis connector?
I see the blue, green and white again from the camera harness, but I also see the purple, black and grey....what are those connected to?

Sorry for all the questions, really appreciate the help!

On the Ram, the signal between the camera and the radio travels through 5 separate harnesses:
Camera to tailgate harness
Tailgate harness to chassis
Chassis to firewall
Firewall to cab
Cab to radio

Of the five harnesses, the requisite wires existed only in the firewall to cab, and the tailgate to chassis harnesses. The other three did not have wires and I had to add wires to them. Fortunately, the wiring from the firewall to the BCM and relay power already existed.

The basic wiring for the camera is as follows:

6 total wires:
Three are the actual video signal and go all the way to the radio.
One goes to the BCM.
One is a ground
One goes to a relay for power.

I can say for sure that the radio connectors I used are the same as you will need. I can also bet that the camera connector is the same. If you want to do an install that it not as clean as the factory would do, all of the work is pretty much done. If you want to run through the factory connectors, you will have to do some research. Unless they're the same connectors as the Ram.

I just pulled up a raondom 2014 Laredo VIN on tech authority (1C4RJEAG9EC198483). The window sticker does not mention a backup camera.

Tech authority shows this Jeep as having all of the requisite wiring to add a backup camera. If this is true, you should be able to buy the camera, install it in the tailgate, and flash the BCM. It looks very simple for you.

Every time I go to techauthority.com and put in a 2014 VIN it tells me its invalid. Is there some trick to getting this site to work?

Just confirmed the sales code for the 2014 JGC with the Rear View Camera is XAC. Now just need to convince the dealership to do this reflash. As my GC is being ordered from the factory, when it arrives at the dealership is it standard practice to "flash the BCM" or do I need to push them to redo this?

So reading this, it seems like this discussion would only apply to a 2014 Laredo with the 8.4" screen option added? Us with the 5" screen would probably not be so lucky to have any of the wiring in place?

Im guessing i would have to go with some kind of "lockpik" device and my own wiring?

Update.... So my new Grand Cherokee came in and I am picking it up tomorrow. I asked the dealer to add the sales code to the BCM and they told me "no". I explained the whole wiring being there and all and they accepted that it was possible.....then told me they wont flash the BCM with the sales code unless I paid their service department to do the installation in full of the factory camera.

For once we actually catch a break for having black Forrest green!
I do have a question however. When typing the part number for black forrest green applique into my dealers website it says that part number has been superceded, should I be worried at all about the part not working or fitting right?

I special ordered my Jeep so I am committed to the vehicle.

I was looking at my tailgate though and I don't understand why you need the painted piece for the camera installation. It looks like I would just replace the flat-black piece where the license plate lamps are with another such piece....am I wrong?

Has anyone actually done this mod yet? I am trying to find someone who can confirm the findings in this thread are factual on the actual vehicle.
Thanks

I drove a Laredo E yesterday which had navigation working on the 8.4" screen.

I think it is supposed to work this way:
1) Want backup camera
2) Rule-out Laredo E due to lack of backup camera
3) Realize that Limited has solid leather standard, so need to order Luxury II to be close to as comfortable as Laredo E cloth seats

I special ordered my Jeep so I am committed to the vehicle.
Why? They can sell it to anybody else. Did you give them any money? I've never made a deposit to order a vehicle.

#37 ·
Yes, I gave them the money cause they had plenty of Laredo's and Limited's in stock and were not interested in giving me the deal I wanted on an "ordered" vehicle unless I committed to it. I checked with about 4 other dealers in the area and they all had a similar response so it must just be common in this area for some reason.

I absolutely agree with your take on why they structure it this way, but it really is disappointing that a $30k+ vehicle doesn't come with something that my wife's $20k CR-V base model came with as standard equipment.

Today I was at the dealership getting my steering wheel re-aligned and I spent some time with the parts department. The prices he gave me for the parts identified is as follows:

Camera - 68137943AF - $301.30
Wiring - 68225287AA - $109.65
Applique - 5PS79LAUAA - $306.90 (This is the Granite Metallic one)

All of these prices seem to be very high. Is there any "cheap" way to get parts from Mopar by number?

Welcome to the wonderful world of some dealerships. A lot of them use a Matrix system which takes MSRP on a part and adds a percentage above that, depending on part popularity, regular stocking, and so forth.

I'd look online for some of the dealerships which also run an internet parts department. It's often much cheaper (though...they use a shipping calculator that's by percentage of cost, which usually works out well in their favor).

These are the things I feared. I was actually hoping someone would make a replacement unit that would relocate the 6 hard buttons and give at least a one din space for something aftermarket.

I'm not holding my breathe. I just hope that a lockpic style device will allow me to use an aftermarket camera.

Ok, its official. I am placing the order through www.weRmopar.com today for the parts. With shipping its coming to a total of $440 which is great! Now comes the scary part.... Will it all fit and work as easily as it sounds in this thread.

Guess I will be the first guinea pig, will hopefully remember to take a ton of pictures and post a write-up when I am done.
