Quick 15 minute job. Replaced with Polk Audio DB351 3.5" speaker. Went with this one because of the 91db sensitivity.

Bottom line...it's worth the minimal money and time. It does not change the overall sound of the system at all, but the increase in bluetooth phone conversation sound is worth every penny.

They came with bass blockers, but I installed it without it because the factory amp should block enough bass with its crossover points.

I still have a speaker left if anyone is interested. $25 shipped. $20 for anyone in MA who wants to pick it up. Live in Upton, work in Newton.

As a follow up to this, I finally did the installation. Took maybe 15 minutes...tops...taking my time. Super easy.

I can tell there is a change, I can hear better highs from the center area. Not bad!

Attached are some pics for reference.

  • Side by side, OEM on left
  • Speaker with adapter harness
  • Area through windshield showing where speaker mounts

Okay, I finally pulled the trigger and ordered the stuff, my phone calls get muddier every day, parts should be here this weekend. If someone else is looking for a single speaker and adapter, pm me.
I somehow ordered the wrong speaker adapters. I called all over Long Island and most audio shops told me that's not a speaker harness number. I thought I would cannibalize them and took one apart, but I decided to just order the correct adapters from Crutchfield and wait forever for them to arrive.

Make sure you don't type 71-039 into amazon and accidentally click on 72-6514 at the top like I did.

Well, its in and done, but I expected more from the posts in this thread. Certainly the dialog is more clear, but not any louder. I regularly have to turn it up into the 30s on handsfree. My door panels are still muddy and occasionally my tweeters get scratchy (its been this way since I got the jeep).

I've got the other speaker and an adapter for $30 shipped if anyone wants it.

Greetings,

It will work for the back doors. My personal opinion if you mount the tweeter to close to the front seats, it might not be to comfortable for the those who sitting in the front. In addition, depending how you like your music, it might also throw it off balance in terms of your sound perception.

If the above cons fit your description, then if you are looking to stay in the Polk family, then check this one out, it is a coaxial:

Polk Audio db651s 6-1/2" 2-way shallow-mount car speakers at Crutchfield.com

Best for now.:)

Greetings,

The easy install would be a 25mm or 1 inch tweeter. Depending on the assembly of the tweeter it might have to modified to fit in the original opening.

Tweeters come in different types of dome material to replicate the sound and this is were you come in. A Focal tweeter that comes with the component sets has a metal or tinny sound and it has more of a bright sound that sounds harsh to some. Best example for this, if what to replicated a dance club sound or the modern hip-hop, electric and various similar types. The other type of tweeter is a soft tweeter that has some sort of fabric such as silk or something similar. The sound is a more natural and very crisp. Music like Rock, Soft rock, easy listening and jazz are excellent choices for this type of tweeter.

Now remember, we all here differently. So what excellent for me might not be good for you and visa vicar. Pop into a local BestBuy and do a comparison test between the different tweeters that come with the component set.

Best for now.:)

Greetings,

For that price point, the Polks have a nice balanced sound. They also a very efficient speaker that does not require an over bearing amount of power to push them. If the music you listen too requires more of a mid bass punch, then you have to step up in price for a better 6.5 speaker.

On many of these component sets, the more money you spend, you are not getting better speaker drivers. You are getting a better passive crossover network and if you are doing just a straight speaker swap in the Alpine Factory system, you not be gaining any advantage since you can not use the crossover properly. When purchase speaker drivers my themselves or really expensive set with the xover, then you really setup.

This something to consider when trying to improve the system and the budget you setup for.

Best for now.:)

I have to say that it made a great improvement in sound quality! Weird how one speaker can do that and wish I would have known about this sooner. I'm putting in new Focal ISS 690 & ISC 165's tomorrow, but could have been satisfied for awhile with just the center speaker change.
Nice little mod for those who are on a speaker budget.
