RHB 430N Update to City Navigator NT 2016.10

I was finally able to update my RHB 430N past CNNT 2014.40 on my 2012. It involved purchasing an updated map through chryslergroup.navigation.com, but it works. If your RHB is eligible for an update through that web site, they will also send you a system software update. It's a new firmware version that I haven't seen anywhere before - 33.02.01. I was starting from firmware version 50.00.07, and here's the full process I went through...

1. Insert the USB stick with the 33.02.01 software update and say YES to update HDD files.
2. When promted to update Garmin software to 3.0, say YES. This will fail with the dreaded 'PND Update Failed' message, but don't worry, we'll get past this later. NOTE - I'm assuming this failed because I was coming from 50.00.07. This may work first time if you're starting from 23.04.41 or 33.01.23. If it does, you can skip steps 7-9.
3. Update application software to 33.02.01, say YES.
4. System reboot.
5. Application and Audio software are flashed.
6. System reboot.

Keep the USB stick plugged in!

7. When prompted to update HDD files, say NO.
8. When promted to updated Garmin software to 3.0, say YES. This time the Garmin update will succeed and your system will be at version 3.0.
9. Confirm both software versions are at 33.02.01 and say NO.

Your system should now be at 33.02.01 with Garmin Software Version 3.0. You can verify by going into Nav->System->About and viewing Software Version in the upper right corner. I think this is the critical step - getting to version 3.0. If you look at newer Garmin maps in Base Camp and do Get Info, it mentions needing Software Version 3.0 and above.

Now time for the map update. If you purchase the update through chryslergroup.navigation.com, they'll send 2014.40. I had already been at 2014.40 and I had a version of 2016.10 that I wanted to use. I assume the same would also work for the 2015.XX maps as well, but I did not test that. The Garmin update card that arrived had the following layout...

Garmin
-- ASR
-- *.asr
-- gmapbmap.img
-- gmapprom.img
-- gmaptz.img
-- JCV
-- *.jcv
-- *.jcv
-- PNX
-- *.pnx
-- POI
-- *.poi
This varied from layouts I had used in the past which just had the gmapprom.img and JCV folder/file under the main Garmin folder. Because updating beyond 2014.40 had always previously resulted in an error message saying 'map not compatible', I was working under the assumption that maybe some of these additional files might be necessary. Maybe they changed the basemap and newer maps were incompatible, I don't know. But playing safe, I copied all these files onto my USB stick. Then overwrote gmapprom.img and JCV with those for 2016.10. I don't know if this ultimately mattered, and I don't want to spend another 2hrs testing with just the base files to find out, but I did and it worked and I'm not messing with it now. If someone wants to try and that works for them, yay.

10. Start car and insert your USB stick with 2016.10.
11. Map update detected, say YES to update.
12. Wait about 75 minutes for the update to finish.
13. You'll get a message that PND Update Complete
14. You'll then get a message that the maps failed to update, but if you actually check the maps in Nav->Maps->Info the update took.

So there you have it RHB owners - finally past 2014.40!

This thread is not to tell people how to get 2015 and 2016 maps nor how they can be unlocked. If you want to go that route, Google can help. But I can tell you that with the software update available through navigation.com you can get past 2014.40.

Now I need to deliberate moving back to 50.00.07 to get the nicer color scheme. Hope this helps. Good luck...

Re: RHB 430N Update to City Navigator NT 2016.10

A few folks have asked for a screen cap of the actual folder layout I used. This was the actual contents of the 2014.40 SD card I purchased. I simply copied all of this to a clean, FAT32 formatted USB stick and then replaced the gmapprom.img and JCV file with those for 2016.10.

Also, I've shared a copy of the 33.02.01 firmware here.

You're on your own for maps. Good luck!

Thanks for the firmware! I updated my 12' Wrangler with 430n to 33.02.01, then was able to install 2016.10 and JCV with only the base .img file and jcv file.

Re: RHB 430N Update to City Navigator NT 2016.10

Thanks for the post! I tried the follow the instructions unfortunately no go on my end and it has been pretty frustrating because I have been trying to update mine since May. I bought my 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee used and my RHB13 430N came with 44.x firmware however, I downgraded it to 33.x then up to 50.x then down to 33.x to be able to update my nav. I was able to make a DVD and I created a Garmin folder and put the 2014.40 gmapprom.img along with the 3D maps in that folder then I put the JCV file within a subfolder of the Garmin folder. Once it read the dvd and immediately came up with a question if I want to upgrade the maps or not and I went through the whole cycle and seemed like it had updated it but gave me an error at the end and when I tried with again it just kept on reading the written files on the DVD and did NOT prompt at all. Now, I have tried this with various of version 2015.30, 2015.10 and 2016.10 etc. still no luck. I have tried to go into the engineering menu by clicking the speed icon on the bottom right then pushing in the middle of the big speedometer still nothing. I have tried all these steps with my Jeep being in ACC, run with it on and none of those combinations seemed to work. When I click on "About" it reads:
Model: RHB13
Software version 4.07
Dealer locator: 2.00
Audio: 2.0
Text: 4.07
GPS 4.15.02
and when the big logo comes up Copyright shows from 2012 to 2013 so I know there is an update out there somewhere but when I put my VIN on garmin.com/Chrysler it says that my maps are up to date?! I have read several forums followed all the directions with the USB stick to DVD and when I think I am going to get luck I get an error saying "Map update was not installed successfully. Please retry update procedure or contact your dealer for assistance." most of the time when I put in a new *.img file it says PND updated but still no change.

What am I doing wrong? Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance!

Re: RHB 430N Update to City Navigator NT 2016.10

I read on another RHB thread, either here or at Jeep Forums or Wrangler Forums, that the RHB was modified mid-2012 so that the software could be updated beyond a certain version. I can't confirm that, but the versions you are running on your 2013 are 1-2 major versions ahead of the software on my 2012. The 33.02.01 firmware took me UP to version 3.0. You're already at v4.07.

Unfortunately, I only have my vehicle on which to test. My VIN showed that an update was available and I went that route and only wanted to share my findings. If this approach does not work for you, you may need to contact a dealer.

Can you confirm the JCV version number that you used for 2016.10? Also, has anyone successfully tried going back to 50.00.07 after performing this process?

Junction View for 2016.10

Also, I have moved back to 50.00.07 after applying my map update. No issues.

430N RHB Updated with Garmin City Navigator 2014.10 NT - Page 24 - Jeep Wrangler Forum

There are links to 33.02.01 for download. I am now up to 2016.10 and back to 50.xx.x.
The only cost is some time spent reading a few pages.

Re: RHB 430N Update to City Navigator NT 2016.10

Some awesome info on this thread, thanks! I was able to use the info here to load 2016.10 as a Supplemental map (no junction views), but since I have a 2013 RHB, I still can't load them as gmapprom.img. The maps that Here/Garmin would like me to purchase for $150 +$30 shipping are several versions old, and too many 2013 RHB owners are having issues installing them.

I wanted to compile some notes from my experiences for anyone who may be using the 2013 version of the RHB and are trying to upgrade their maps. I've been chasing the map update issue for awhile myself and have gathered some information from this site, the Wrangler forum, and a couple other sites and wanted to share. I have some questions at the bottom as well.

Some background info - my RHB came loaded with 44.xx.xx (or something like that). I upgraded to 50.00.07 some time ago, then to 50.01.01 recently. My OEM maps were from 2013. I don't have the exact name of the mapfile.

As some folks have already found out, the later versions of the RHB (2013 as far as I've read) are having issues with map updates. In one instance I had seen on a Chrysler forum, a 2013 user found that the GMA file for the gmapprom.img file is required for the map to actually load. Without the proper GMA file (gmapprom.gma) you aren't going to get it to work on a 2013. The GMA files are encrypted. Now whether or not this is accurate, I can't be sure, but it makes sense, since I've tried all the methods that 2011-2012 RHB owners have had success with, and I have no luck. No matter which version of firmware I downgrade to (50.xx.xx, 44.xx.xx, 33.xx.xx) the Garmin firmware stays the same RHB15 and 5.11, and I'm guessing its the Garmin firmware blocking my attempts - looking for the GMA file. If someone has had a different experience, please chime in.

A word of caution for 2013 RHB owners - When I downgraded to 33.xx.xx, then tried to come back up to 50.xx.xx, the RHB went into a boot loop. I found a solution on a Chrysler forum from another user who had this idea that proved to save my radio. During the boot loop, the only thing working was the DVD door. Following the other poster's steps, I burned the 50.01.01 firmware to a CD - not a DVD - and stuck it in. The radio proceeded to come out of the boot loop and complete the firmware upgrade...I didnt have to tell the Admiral that I just killed her radio.

Anyway as I said above, I had some limited success with the map upgrade over with weekend. I've always received the "map update failed" message no matter which mapset I tried. I was however able to load the 2016.10 map as a Supplemental (20 min on a USB stick) and the system actually defaults to it. The OEM map doesnt appear in the maps menu but its still there according to the xml file (interestingly, the 2016.10 are not found in the xml file). When I look at "Map Info" on screen, only the 2016.10 is listed. Another word of caution - for those of you who like Junction Views - they would NOT load for me. I didnt think they would, as I dont believe map files you load as supplemental maps will make use of them. I asked the Admiral before the update if she'd rather have up-to-date maps or 3 year old maps with Junction Views. She went for the update. The gmapprom file already contains built-in lane assist, and that was fine with her. We verified the new mapset is being used when we went for a drive on Sunday by noting that new roads show up, and no junction views appear. I have screenshots of the update process if anyone has questions or needs any info. To load as a supplemental, the filename needs to be gmapsupp.img in the Garmin folder.

I'm continuing to look into this. I'd like to find out how to remove the Supplemental maps (just because). From another forum - On the Chrysler CTP radio, you remove files by creating a "Disabled" folder on the root of the USB stick and adding files/subfolders you want removed into "Disabled". I haven't tried it yet to see if it works on the RHB.

I hope someone finds some of this info useful. I also have two questions...

1) has anyone ever figured out a way to access "engineering mode" on the 2013 RHB 430N? Holding down on the speed circle doesnt work. I also posted another thread for that question.

2) Does anyone have a 2013 RHB with the stock maps? If you go to Map info, you'll see a map name something like "OEM 2013 North America" but could you give me the exact name? I unfortunately didnt take a screenshot of this, and I wonder if the map name may have something to do with the upgrade failing. Probably not, but worth a look. you can use GMap Tool to change the names of the img files on a PC.

Thanks!
