Re: RHR Gracenotes Update (Sox comes through again!)

Update to earlier-discussed problems encountered when our RHR went off early in a Gracenote install (with an implied thanks to Sox for the unintended result):

Friendly dealer was going to simply reinstall v2.120 firmware as I'd requested, but upon closer examination they feel the radio is defective and insist on installing a new radio. Granted, there were a couple of minor issues I'd just let slide [occasionally weird and gargley AM audio (not selective fading), sudden blank screen on rare occasion], so perhaps they ran diagnostics and nasty codes popped up.

Whatever, it should have the larger hard disk and be six months newer, so I didn't argue even if it means lots of reloading of audio files to hard disk.

If you can find out, see if the replacement is a new or reconditioned unit.

Prompt for Gracenote update will appear shortly. Answer yes and update will begin. Takes about 20 minutes and will say update successful when completed. I left the Key FOB in the Jeep during the update and came back to check on it 15 minutes later. If it still does not work, try another USB. The first USB I used gave me a "Serious Error" message half way through the update and aborted update.
These instructions worked well for me also. I had to download the software twice, it appears that there was a problem with my first download. I tried to install on three different memory sticks. Re-downloaded the software and the install ran in a little less than 20 minutes on one of the memory sticks that continually failed during the first attempt. Thanks SOX for providing the instructions and location to download the software from.

Agreed. A smaller hard disk would be a sure sign of a reconditioned unit.

Re: RHR Gracenotes Update (Sox comes through again!)

Thanks to Sox for the updates and instructions. I was able to update my RHR software to 2.120 no problem, but the Gracenotes update is giving me a headache.

Followed the instructions, but the first three attempts on three separate memory sticks were not recognized by the RHR. Deleted the original folder/ file, downloaded again, moved to one of the memory sticks I tried previously, and the screen shows it's reading the stick. Yes! Seconds later I'm asked if I want to update the Gracenotes, Yes! Warning about not turning off the power until it finishes- no problem, I'll be driving for an hour. Within seconds after this I get a "serious error" message and the screen goes black. System re-boots on it's own and now I've got a functioning system, but no album art. Waited a few minutes, nothing happening, pulled the memory stick, turned the car off, back on, now the system isn't recognizing the memory stick? Repeated the process a few times with the same result, and now when I check the system info screen it shows "NA" next to Gracenotes.

Can this update even be accomplished now that it appears I have no version of Gracenotes?? I'd really appreciate any help here, otherwise it looks like a trip to the dealer is in my near future. Thanks!

Edit: Just re-read the entire thread here and saw a similar situation and resolution with re-install. Will continue to try and make this work.

Re: RHR Gracenotes Update (Sox comes through again!)

dslide, Yes this update can be accomplished with no version of Gracenotes. I got the same "Serious Error" message the first two times I tried the update and the 730N rebooted and System Info said NA for Gracenotes version. I suggest you load a MP3 song on a blank fat 32 USB to see if the 730N will read the drive. If it does, read my previous 5 posts. Good luck!

Agree. With our unit after Gracenotes vanished, USB -- MP3 files and so on -- was no longer recognized despite many tries, various thumb drives, reboots and so forth. But if MP3 files play via your USB, then you should be able to sort things out eventually.

Re: RHR Gracenotes Update (Sox comes through again!)

Thanks for the input guys. I'll get after it again today and see what happens.

Update: Looks like I have a non working USB now. Won't recognize music files either. I guess I'll have to make a trip to the dealer to get this sorted out.

Re: RHR Gracenotes Update (Sox comes through again!)

After at least a dozen futile attempts to download the update files, I turned off my router's firewall and managed to get the files downloaded. I put the unzipped files on a thumb drive and plugged it into the radio...nothing. Next, I added an .mp3 file and plugged it in. The song began playing and the Gracenote update folder showed up on the screen but the update would not start. Next, I tried another thumb drive, with the same result...nothing. I had no problem updating the Nav to 2.12 several weeks ago so I don't get it. What's missing here?

Was only the upgrade on your thumb drive? If not, delete the other files. Too, in addition to the stuff in the zip folder there's another small unzipped file you downloaded. Try including that on your thumb drove along with the unzipped files from the folder and see if that helps.

You maybe saving the incorrect folder or file to the USB. Download and unzip gn 4118 rhr us. Then copy ONLY the resulting UNZIPPED gndb folder and the resulting UNZIPPED gnupdate file to a fat 32 blank USB (no mp3 files). If update still does not work, download and unzip gn 4118 rhr us again, then copy ONLY the resulting UNZIPPED gndb folder and resulting UNZIPPED gnupdate file to the same USB or a different USB. Good luck, Larry
