Scrapped factory system

Well, I got my Jeep with the HK stereo because I didn't want to have to get into the stereo. After a little over a year I just happened to find myself in a stereo shop. I am a huge JL fan, have had nothing but great success with them in the past. I went a little overboard with the system design on this one and I know it's not everybody's cup of tea but here's what I fit in the WK2.
Kenwood DNX893S
Maestro adapter
Audiocontrol DM-810
2 JL HD600/4 (150x4)
2 JL C5 tweeters in front
4 JL C5 5 1/4 mids in front 6x9 spot
2 JL C2 6 1/2 coax rear fill
3 JL HD 750/1 (750x1)
3 JL 10w6v3
Optima Yellow Top

So the DM-810 gives me 10 channels out so I have time alignment for all my channels individually as well as active crossovers for every speaker. No active crossovers are used except what would be built into the rear fill coax's.

Re: Scrapped factory system

You lost me when you removed the 8.4" UConnect. I don't think I could get over that.

I'm sure it sounds great.

It might sound good but definitely not for me. That head unit looks horrible.

Re: Scrapped factory system

Greetings,

Nice setup. A little overboard on the sub's maybe.

Is the Maestro and Kenwood reading the car functions?

Best for now.

Greetings,

The HU might look ugly, but the Kenwood 893S will bet the 8.4 in sound quality by miles and miles. Plus, either CarPlay or Android Auto and a real Garmin navigation.

Sounds good to me.

Best for now.

Re: Scrapped factory system

Nice setup. And alot of hard work there. But would have to agree with the others about the source unit.

I know why you went for that unit but i think if i was going to upgrade my system i would still leave the uConnect in place and working and have a single head unit stashed somewhere for all audio needs with video placed some where else . Would look a lot cleaner up front. Just my 2cents worth. Still appreciate the work that has gone into it.

Love the jeep logo placed on top of the amprack cover in pic 5.

Re: Scrapped factory system

As you said, not everybody's cup of tea. But when a friend of mine would say I was crazy for what I spend on cameras, his wife would always say "there is something for everyone".

This is your thing and it looks like you went at it full tilt. Way to go!

I hope you get many years of listening pleasure.

Re: Scrapped factory system

Scrapping the uConnect was a difficult decision for me. The Maestro does a great job at integrating features. The only thing I know I am missing, is the beeps that happen when your backing up and someone is driving behind you in a parking lot for example. Even that, I must admit, wasn't 100% with the uConnect but it was nice when it worked. The biggest decision for the aftermarket unit for me was speed. I can put my entire CD collection in .flac format on a small drive and flip through it effortlessly. With the uConnect, the speed was very slow for me.

I did retain all the original parts so it can go back to stock when it comes time to replace the vehicle. The side sub enclosure is a stealthbox with a 1" spacer ring so the w6 fits. We just ripped the carpet off and vinyl wrapped it. Had to body work the spacer in place a little so the transition was nice and smooth under the vinyl.

Re: Scrapped factory system

I have my entire CD collection on the uConnect (approx 9000 songs on a 128GB drive).
Granted, it's MP3 (at lowest compression). And it can be a little sluggish at times but quite usable.

For the record no human will HEAR the difference between lowest compression MP3 (fixed 320mbs) and FLAC on a consumer system, let alone on a car based system where the noise floor is ridiculously high.

Most important on any system is the drivers, then the amps, then the head unit/processor.

Even though it wouldn't be my "cup of tea", nice workmanship. That system is insane. I'd love to hear it.

Did you do any "room" acoustic treatment

I pulled a trick on a high end audio forum once.

I took a flac and converted it to 192 MP3 and 256 MP3.
Then I converted the 192 MP3 back to flac. So the loss was pre-applied to the flac.

Then I uploaded and asked members to vote which sounded better to them.
They ALL picked the fake FLAC. Even though in theory it was worse.

These folks were evaluating on $20K, $50K, $100K, $250K audio systems (rooms).

Re: Scrapped factory system

How do you control all the HVAC functions without the 8.4? I've thought about scrapping the system but can't get around that part. Way more that I would ever think of doing, but a clean install for sure.
