SD card Vs USB

2014 GC Overland. I put about 2000 songs on an SD card. Sometimes it would work and sometimes went bonkers. Would mess up the phone Bluetooth to where neither one worked, but the phone would still take and make phone calls. Couldn't get anything to work until I shut everything (vehicle) down for a couple of minutes. I scrapped the SD and went with a USB drive and so far no problems. Anyone have a solution to the SD problem?

Re: SD card Vs USB

I'm using a 16gb sandisk class 4 sd card and haven't had an issue. I also use a couple of usb sticks, and no issues with those either. Been using them all for a month now.

I started having gremlins in my system once I crossed 1000miles. Before, I had both an sdcard and USB and they loaded every time, now it is hit or miss. I haven't tried reformatting and reloading yet to see if it fixes my problem,

Re: SD card Vs USB

I have a 2014 Overland with about 3K miles on it now. My first experiment with the SD card reader was using a 16GB SD card I purchased at Costco. It worked fine intermittently. Every time I inserted it, the song count on the display kept changing, sometimes more, sometimes less. Somtimes a song would just stop playing and the entire system would seize up.

Turns out, it was the first time I had ever purchased a corrupt SD card. Weird part was that read/write worked fine on my laptop. I reformatted several times with no success. Eventually, I took the card back to Costco and got another one.....no problems since.

I have about 2000 songs on the card and while it does typically take about 15-20 seconds to begin playing, all is well. Song count is correct, plays fine, artwork is there, etc.

You may want to experiment with a different SD card, just to see if you are having a similar episode to mine. Good luck.

Same as me. Had a 16gb USB stick. Worked fine now at around 1500-2000 miles it's hit or miss. Lately it has been miss.

Wish they had an answer for this.

The SD cards and USB sticks of today are mostly junk. They are very cheap and very limited in read write. I do some photography on the side and if you don't buy a good card they last a very short while.

USB sticks are NOT designed for constant read access. There is a specific number of read writes they can do then they fail. You can get better ones but I always tell people they are not for critical storage. Also every time that type of static memory storage gets an impact (drop) it starts corrupting sectors.

Best most reliable thing you can use is a refurb iPod. I bought an iPod with a broken face for 50 bucks used (of course). I have had it in my car for 3 years and it works perfect. I did try a USB stick in another car (it cost me 30 bucks) and it lasted a few months. Also just a note you can use iTunes for your personal library.

I hear you on all that you wrote. But by getting an old mp3 player or ipod you have to hook it up via 3.5mm cord. IN that case you can't use the on screen display to change songs and browse through folders. You would have to do that directly on the ipod which sucks.

Kind of missing the '08 design now a little I had with the hard drive I can pre-load songs onto...

Sorry I might be missing something here. That is the reason I did iPod. You have a USB port if you are using a USB stick (which is the more evil of the card and stick). Plug the iPod directly into the USB port. Stays charged and I haven't taken mine even out of the Durango in a month. All the meta data transfers through and even on a 2011 you get cover art etc.

Re: SD card Vs USB

I tried USB and a sd Sandisk 32GB Ultra.
The SD is faster but not as fast as I would like when browsing.
So far it's working fine.

The Sandisk Ultra is a pretty good SD and will work fairly reliably. It is more the generic USB sticks that are not very good.

I didn't even think plugging the ipod into the usb port just into the headphone jack. I might try that glad to hear its working.

OH BOY... Dont say I said it worked on the 2014..... I haven't actually tried it. I am currently using it on the old unit int a 2011 Durango and it works "OK" I have tried the Music over Bluetooth with both iphones and android devices and that works great.... so i ASSuME the USB is fully supporting iPods.

I will test the theory but I won't be at a dodge store until next Tuesday. My only caution is that not all iPods are created equal. Some iPod generations work better than others in vehicles.... "generally" speaking though since MY 2009 most vehicles with a USB port have "generally" supported ipods "fairly" well. OK that was either political speak or service advisor verbal diarrhea .

If you have a device with bluetooth that can also Carry audio files (smartphone), the auto sync and play jumping in and out of the 2014 JGC works better than the Cadillac CUE system. This I tested pretty extensively on a little project I was on for a client.... I also know that there may be a funtionality update coming for this as currently I dont think album art is supported wirelessly (bluetooth).
