It just doesn't update traffic in real time, period. For instance, it always shows "red" for traffic on the same sections of rt. 93N Monday - Friday when going home from work...even when it's not heavy, it shows "red" on sections of feeder roads when there's no traffic at all, and it gives verbal traffic warnings (example: "traffic jam on rt. 93N between exits 12 and 14") for non-existent traffic.

Do I not have something turned on or set correctly on my 8.4AN radio? My free year subscription is not even close to expiring...and everything else seems to work.

I will agree with you on that, it just does not update fast enough. I just take a look at my galaxy S4 phone before I go to work, a quick glance before I leave and its very close to real time. XM sound quality and XM traffic update rate both need work.

Re: SiriusXM Traffic: Useless or What?

If I heard "traffic jam ahead" one more time I would have started smashing things... I agree, XM Traffic = useless.

I'll just check my phone before I leave or if I start to hit traffic to see if there is a better alternative.

Re: SiriusXM Traffic: Useless or What?

I used Traffic for the first time, on a trip to the NYC area.

The problem is that it seems to be designed to only handle when just one highway has traffic. It would then simply re-direct you to an alternate traffic-free route.

However, the reality I found is that when one highway is tied up in traffic, all the alternatives quickly get tied up in traffic too.

For me, it went into "Traffic update.... recalculating route... exit left up head ... traffic update ... recalculating route... exit right up head.... traffic update.... recalculating route... exit left up head ... traffic update ... recalculating route... exit right up head.... " "Recalculating left... recalculating right..." "Left... right... left... right...".

It was so ridiculous, we just started laughing.

It just can't seem to handle the very typical case where there are no free/empty alternative routes. It freaks out when all the alternative routes are just as clogged up with traffic as the original.

"Norman please coordinate."

Waze is awesome. BUT, on a long trip or to an unknown area, I like to use it in conjunction with a traditional NAV like Google NAV or a built-in vehicle NAV. But I use Waze around town all the time. It's fun too.

Re: SiriusXM Traffic: Useless or What?

I love it. It's saved lots of time for me on many occasions. Works in real time. I think it may depend on your location though. Data seems to be better in certain areas. I can't do without it in NYC/NJ/penn

Re: SiriusXM Traffic: Useless or What?

my theory-

there's a LOT of data to describe traffic for every highway in America. The satellites have to broadcast the data for every highway to every radio. Since they are bandwidth constrained (see everyone complaining about poor audio quality) they don't dedicate a lot of bandwidth to transmitting the traffic data (so there are less complaints about audio quality). So it probably takes 10-15 minutes to transmit all the traffic data at the sub dialup speeds they need to sent it. Once it's all been "updated" they get fresh data and sent it again. So MAYBE you get an update 3 or 4 times an hour.

On the flip side, waze, google, et al that use your cellular broadband can request and then send you just the data you need for that particular screen view your device is looking at right now. There's no need to broadcast the data for all of america to every device. It's much smaller so they can send you an update maybe every minute if they wanted.

So inherently sirius/xm traffic data will be less timely than a 2 way cellular fed app.

Chrysler/Uconnect/Sprint/XM should really make better use of the data modem in the thing and work out a way that the nav could ask for a specific updated slice of data more frequently and then get just that bit over the cellular radio.

In general the 2-way features stink (why does it take 2-5 minutes to start the vehicle, why can't I ping for a location , why can't i ping for door lock/engine run/ fuel/mileage/battery status- these are all things that a $5 a month Delphi connect dongle that connects to your OBDII port can do). So doubt 2 -way more current traffic will be addressed on this version of the hardware/uconnect. Maybe when they have a hardware version where they remove the training wheels and put in an LTE modem and make it a bigger part of the internet of things....

that said - supposedly some of us are getting 5 years of free traffic so it's a nice little extra- but if i really need up to the minute I'll grab my smartphone and look at google or a more current source.

Re: SiriusXM Traffic: Useless or What?

Quick question.

What is the best setting for traffic in the navigation options: automatic, manual, or delay?

Can someone describe the functionality of each setting? I cannot find anything in the manuals.

Thanks in advance.

Type/detail of info available also depends on where you are, and what type of inputs Sirius can get from police, DOTs, traffic sensors, etc.
