Some audio update questions..

I have a 2014 limited with a 8.4an. And although i dont totally HATE it.. the volume is horrible..

I have laying around from my last car a JL 500/5 amp. And a couple of kicker 10 CVT (which i know arn't great but for the size suprised me..)

So.. main question is.. is there and existing harness to breakout from the factory head unit? which i obviously can't change.. does anyone have a setup of upgraded door/apillar speakers they can recommend that arn't insanely expensive?

And b: i havn't seen the factory sub box outof the vehicle.. can it be opened up to take a 10"?

I did a search but cant find pics of a 2014 build yet.. just alot of talk.. thanks..

Re: Some audio update questions..

It's not going to be that cheap, nor easy to upgrade. I'm unsure if PAC has a harness for the 14s yet (to add afermarket amps). Even if they do, it's not desirable -- because you lose control of your sound (bass/treble/etc.). In order to add your amp, you'll need a LOC with input summing, or DSP processor. You need summing capability because there is not a full-range signal present in the OE setup. The processor or LOC would sit between the OE amp, and your amp. I went with the AC LC6i (cheapest solution), and am pleased with the results. Sure, I'd be even more happy with an MS-8, but I can't spend that much. Once you have a full-range signal, you can then upgrade to the speakers of your choice. Your options are endless. Without, it's a waste to upgrade any speakers except for the 3.5" dash.

PS> I don't have the 8.4an, but I'm quite sure the same applies. I've been working on my 430N in my Ram, and it's a major PITA (unless you want to rip all of it out, or have unlimited funds and time).

Re: Some audio update questions..

You are saying i will lose treble/bass control? Is it actually not in the HU but in the amp now? or?

Re: Some audio update questions..

You would only lose bass/treble if you used a PAC device. After reading another thread, it appears as PAC does not make an adapter for your '14 yet, so don't worry about that. Bass/treble, etc. is done via CANBus at the amp. Thus, if you insert a device between the OE HU and OE amp, you'll lose that functionality. This is why you can't really bypass the OE amp. Trust me, once you get into it, you will be really frustrated. If you are somewhat happy, you might as well leave it alone. Search other forums, I'm sure someone has upgraded the 8.4N. It would be the same process across all platforms (Chargers, Challengers, Rams, etc.). It may take something like the BitOne, MS-8, etc. as a start.

I don't know what all has changed since I have the 430N (3x now). Coming from a Lincoln THXII system, I was extremely disappointed. There's a night&day difference between them. Never once did I want to improve the sound of my THXII system. This was after having aftermarket in every car prior.

Re: Some audio update questions..

You can buy a Audison Bit Ten for around $300. It will sum and de-equalize the frequency from the stock amp allowing you to send a clean signal to your aftermarket amps. This is what I plan on doing soon.

Re: Some audio update questions..

Thanks guys... I didnt realize the head unit wasn't doing bass/treble. what a mess.. I mainly would like a bit more volume and clarity..

So starting with speakers wouldn't hurt. Any recommendations? and do they make any adapters so no wires have to be cut? thanks guys

Re: Some audio update questions..

Ok.. was just about to order some speakers for the front doors.. And need some advice.. right now i will be leaving the stock amp in, so no need to use the crossover coming with the speakers correct?

Also.. is there an adapter to plug into the stock harness and not cut up stuff?
This is on a 2014 jgc..

BTW.. the speakers i was looking at
Kickers..

Was curious if i should look at something else under 200 that might be better? i have always had good luck with kicker though..

Re: Some audio update questions..

Look at and compare the "efficiency" of the various speaker options... it's measured in dB/Watt and higher is better. Often, higher quality speakers have reduced efficiency, and you don't want to go to all the effort for less volume

Cheers,
Steve

Re: Some audio update questions..

After doing a bit of research.. found a local place that has Hybrid Audio Imagine series in stock.. 6x9 and 6.5".. gonna get a pair of both

Just wish i had adpaters for the speaker plugs dont think i can get them locally.. anyone have a link for the proper ones?

Only question is.. the HAT tweeters have a built on crossover (kinda).. So should i leave it and just plug in or will having the amps cutoff and the one on the tweeter mess it up?

Re: Some audio update questions..

Good choice with the HAT speakers; I went with Hertz myself but I would like to try HAT Clarus at some point. If I were you I would first check the impedance of those HATs vs. Factory. I believe most of the factory Alpine speakers are 2ohms vs. 4ohm for the HAT. This could make the factory amplifier work too hard and could eventualy make it fail. That would be more expensive than adding a LOC or a DSP to integrate new amps\speakers into de JGC.

Re: Some audio update questions..

Bah.. didnt see that the HAT's are 4ohm... i thought that it only had a chance of hurting a amp if the speaker impedence was lower than what the amp can do? like 4 wont hurt a amp that does 2.. but 2ohm on a 4ohm amp will?

But i do believe 4ohm wont get the same volume as 2's... anyone know for sure?

P.S. the 4ohms will be fine.. i do have a JL 500/5 i would like to install one day.. just not sure on getting low lvl inputs for it.. hate spending $600 on a dsp to do all that
