Strange behavior RA4 media mode

Ok, so my 2014 Overland with 3K miles just started to have some radio/media issues.....When car has been off for a long period of time, say overnight, when started it goes through normal "boot up" with Jeep screen etc. The radio always seems to default to the FM band, and media seems to default to the CD player (yeah I got one of those, came with car). When I switch to usb port it would find port and play mp3's on flash drive. However, if I drive for a while and stop car, say for gas, when I restart, it will not recognize the USB port, nor the SD card. It will however still play the CD. However, if I leave the car for a while shut off (I would say an hour or more) it will reboot upon starting and I'll have usb/sd until I shut it down, and re-start, then nothing. If I could re-boot radio that would fix problem, but of course there is no way to re-boot the radio, (absent reset using hidden menu). Then you have a new set of issues. Anyway, read on my friends.....

So I take it to dealer the other day. I think it's a software issue, they say no, it needs a new media module (you know the unit where you plug in the usb/sd/aux items. So they order a part. As of today, not in yet. However here is the new wrinkle. I read on some thread that feedback from RA4 can corrupt data on a usb card as there is no way to write protect it. So I got a larger SD card, loaded all my mp3s on it, locked it so it can't be written to, and voila....it has been working fine for several days...go figure??

But now, when I start the car, it no longer defaults to the FM station on radio, nor the cd on media mode? This even when starting first thing in morning after being off all night. Has anyone else noticed this crazy behavior? Has my use of a write protected SD car solved my problem? Should I forget the "fix" my dealer has in store (I figure with my luck, they'll F up my dash trim and fix nothing...

Re: Strange behavior RA4 media mode

If it's now doing everything you want it to do then don't have the dealer mess with it and potentially cause more problems.

Yeah, seriously... there's a good chance they'll create more problems than they resolve.

See how things go for a period of time. You can always have the fix done at a later date.

Re: Strange behavior RA4 media mode

ok, so a week later and all is good with SD card. So maybe ability to write protect media source is important.....also, now unit is defaulting to FM on radio and CD in media mode on original boot up. I assume this is normal default positions? When I shift to media, and press SD card, it takes a second or two and then starts playing my SD card....so God is in his Heaven and all is right with the world...(and the dealer never called to say part is in yet, typical)

There is no way that an unbroken interface would harm the data on your stick even if you forget to write protect it.
The sheer number of folks who use sticks or run halfway across the US with a single stick left in the unit would tend to indicate that something IS horked up on yours.

Your call on whether to live with it, fix it, or consider the use of C4.

Re: Strange behavior RA4 media mode

C4 is out of the question, it would scratch my wood grain Ok, so I just got back from the dealer...they replaced the USB/SD/Aux input module...I even purposely brought a flash drive, SD card and I pod, so they could test it with media.....took only one hour to replace....left, stopped a block away to test and guess what? yeah, you're right no fix...SD card will play but the minute you insert a USB device, nothing works, no SD, no Bluetooth music, and of course no USB...So I went back and insisted on talking to Tech....he actually knew what he was talking about (much to my surprise)...he said all he can do now is replace the head unit...ridiculous overkill.... he said sometimes the input module is bad, but in this case he agreed it's a software bug....he can only update to latest software, which I already have...or replace parts....I get that, I know he can't write code, so I'm gonna have to live with this till and if a new software version comes out which may or may not address the issue..oh well, it's really a minor issue as long as my SD card continues to work...
