Re: The Back UP Camera feature is set up WRONG from the factory

Besides the camera, the reverse sensors work immediately and BEEPS if there is anything behind. (I have to turn it off with my bike hitch on.)

Re: The Back UP Camera feature is set up WRONG from the factory

Jeep kinda gets screwed on this one either way. People are too lawsuit happy, so if they didn't put up the warning when the car starts and someone crashes while playing with the nav they would file a suit saying "well jeep didn't tell me I shouldn't play with these feature while I drive.". On the other hand, if someone backs into something with the attention screen on it can go the other way. But it is only 3 seconds and I like the idea of turning your head and seeing if anyone is coming from out of the view of the camera while you are waiting.

1. Put foot on brake and put SUV in reverse.
2. While keeping foot on brake, put your right hand on the back of the passenger's head rest to give you leverage to turn in your seat.
3. Pivot in your seat, using the leverage referenced in Step 2, to the 5 o'clock position, your neck should be able to make it to 6 o'clock.
4. Use your eyes and look for obstacles out the rear glass.
5. Slowly take your foot off the brake allowing the vehicle to backup.
6. Congrats, you just backed up in reverse like millions of people have been doing for over 100 years!!!!!
I would kind of disagree with number 6. I see plenty of people who only use their rear view mirror. At least I hope they are.

Whenever I turn and put my arm on the passenger seat to look back when reversing, I get funny looks.

It's only going to get worse with back up cameras and all these nonsense collision avoidance gimmicks. People will expect them to save them from themselves.

I'll be sold when I have autopilot in my cockpit. Until then, manual all the way. I haven't used cruise control this millennium.

Re: The Back UP Camera feature is set up WRONG from the factory

Backing between a couple of vehicles in my driveway the other evening, I realized I was fixated on the backup camera (it's my first)... Nearly scraped my right front fender on another vehicle

No substitute for the Mark I eyeballs...

Yes , that is the exact point I am trying to make, why should I have to wait to do a safe back up using my car's backup camera.

Why can't the Jeep logo, and safety message come up when I put the car in drive ?

Your wrong. It does not work properly to do the job it was designed to do .

WRONG!!

My 2005 Toyota 4Runner doesn't do this!

I think this is the stupidest thing I've heard of. There are times when you NEED to back up quickly. Having any kind of delay is unacceptable!!

If you check ANY other vehicle with a backup camera, I'd put real money on them functioning like my 4Runner versus how Jeep has done it!

Is it me, or does the ONLY time the safety screen appear is when you start the vehicle?

That's pretty funny. Moosehead has shared a ton pictures of where he's taken his new Grand Cherokee. All we've heard from you so far is that you can't back up right away.

I sure hope so!

I'm planning on buying a new JGC but if this is how the backup camera functions, I just might not!!

Yes, it is that important to me. I back my vehicle in almost every time I park (98%). The only time I don't is into my garage area. Having a delay before the backup camera comes on would be totally unacceptable.

BTW, it is much better to back into a parking spot than it is to pull forward into one. It also makes leaving much easier and safer.

People, get over it! The camera comes on in 1 second (I timed it). It takes that long for the trans to settle down. You should not move the car that fast anyway. As far as the "safety screen" it only comes on when you turn the radio on and that is not needed for the camera to come on. If the radio is on the safety screen goes away when you put it in "R".
