Tips for Using Voice Activation w/ Navigation?

Hi all, trying to become acquainted with using the voice activation to enter destinations into the navigation. It's been a pretty frustrating experience so far. I've tried to search the forums for help, but maybe I'm the only one having problems. It rarely recognizes even the city and state name that I say (I simplified my commands to just go to a specific city w/o the address to see if I could make an progress). I think it gives me options for where to search (I'm not in the vehicle right now), and it always seems to default to Texas, United States. I live in Kansas, and I would think it should be able to pick that up as my current location. Are there any TSBs or known fixes for voice command issues w/ the navigation system? Thanks!

Re: Tips for Using Voice Activation w/ Navigation?

There's been quite a few folks with VR problems. The system seems to work well for me, but you need to say the right things to get the responses you want. Voice commands seem to work better with the latest UConnect software update, which is available here:

Using the correct prompts makes a difference. Here are a couple of usage aids:

Re: Tips for Using Voice Activation w/ Navigation?

Okay, I will try these. I'm fairly certain I'm not using the correct voice commands in all cases, but it usually recognizes what I'm attempting to do, just using the wrong address, POI, etc.

One other problem I have with the navigation which I just remembered is that it always seems to zoom all of the way in. I'll adjust it so that it's back out to 1/4 mile or whatever, but as soon as it gets to the next intersection or next instruction (not sure which), it zooms right back in. It looks like I'm using the automatic zoom setting, which seems to be zoomed in too far for practical purposes. Maybe I need to give up on the automatic zoom?

The zoom returning to the closest setting is just the way it functions. I agree, it should stay where you set it, but it doesn't. Is there a setting in the navigation settings to turn automatic zoom off? I don't recall having seen that.

Re: Tips for Using Voice Activation w/ Navigation?

yep- you need to turn the auto zoom off in the settings if you want to see more than the immediate 50 feet in front of you.

also- i forget where but someplace in there i seem to recall that you can set the state to start in. I think it might be just relevant to when you type- but maybe it helps with voice so you can ignore saying the state and there's one less word for it to recognize. (might only be on the 8.4n- i forget) Try typing an address and getting it set to Kansas, then next time try VR without mentioning state and see if it figures out Kansas. Might help.

others have mentioned the voice recognition seems to be tuned to coastal accents. I grew up outside NY City and it understands me fine. If it really is tuned that way- then try getting a crappy attitude and drop the friendliness of the middle of the country and maybe it will recognize you better- probably helps to speak fast and impatient too- laughing.

also supposedly the uconnect access VR is "cloud based" - not sure if the basics are too or if that only applies to texting on your phone. But if it applies to everything and you don't have a strong sprint signal it might just have to use whatever, probably limited, local fallback that it might have. Have you noticed if the "3G" icon is lit up when you have had problems? I'd guess that trying the YELP app's search would also force cloud based VR- maybe that would help?

sorryif itsounds like i'm just guessing- pretty much am- but maybe you get lucky....

When using NAV voice commands, make sure system is set to United States not Canada. Every new Jeep I've had with factory NAV, 4 in total, came from the factory with the setting on Canada. If left this way, the system won't recognize voice commands for streets, cities etc.

On the screen, click on NAV and then options/settings and it should be in there.
