Took delivery yesterday, 730N already an issue

Yesterday I took delivery of my JGC Overland with the 730N media center. I was scheduled for 1pm to sign the paperwork and vehicle review. The vehicle wasn't ready and being the last day of the month the Finance Mgr was behind schedule. I can understand this as they had a lot of transactions scheduled. I did the rough inspection to check for dents, scratches, interior marks, etc but didn't look at the finer details. I signed the paperwork and declined the offer by the salesperson for a review the technology. I've had other vehicles with all this technology so I figured it would be easy enough to adapt to the Jeep system. Plus I am that learns quicker via trial and error. Anyway I go to start-up the Jeep and noticed, no push button start. That's weird. Simply put they forgot to put it in during the prep phase. Minutes later the problem is resolved. OK, I proceed to drive away as I was running late for an appointment.

As I was driving I go to connect my iPod. I search both storage areas for the USB cable. Nothing. Perhaps it was in the same bag as the original push button. No problem, while inconvenient, I will call the dealer and schedule a time to pick-up the cable.

Hours later I arrive home and would spend time with the basics such as training the Homelink and pairing my phone. First part done. Second, hmm, there's no option here for it (even though I have the 730N). I break down and consult the User Guide. What, there are two versions of the 730N based on sales codes being RER and RHR. Of course I have the later which doesn't provide support for Uconnect. In my opinion, this is stupid. Why have two versions of the 730N when the Bluetooth part is so common in vehicles today. Also I looked at the brochure and there is no reference to the two versions. Only a matrix showing the 730N with the Uconnect capability. Perhaps my omission but I didn't see any clear information to identify the units.

I will be contacting the dealer today and make a case to have them switch the unit to I have the RER model. Has anybody gone through this before? Any experience, good or bad, would be helpful to me.

Thanks,
NHman

Check out the JGC owners' site.
http://www.jeep.com/en/owners/quality/
They don't offer the RHR anymore. I wonder if they installed yours by accident, or if it is an older build?

It was not a custom order. Rather one from the dealers inventory with a build date of June 2011. Stranger that it has the older 730N.

I have spoken with my salesperson and hope this is simply a PnP replacement.

Re: Took delivery yesterday, 730N already an issue

The RHR is the newer 730 series radio, started being installed Jan 2011. It has been a mandatory option on the Overlands for awhile. The Jeep radio site is out of date, they have been a bit weak on the info and slow to update.

See http://www.wk2jeeps.com/wk2_navigation.htm

The so called u connect is integrated into the radio. (the older radios had a separate module). Unlike some other radios, there is no cables, just a USB outlet in the center console and center dash, along with the one on the radio. You use your standard iPod cable. For best results the iPhone/iPOD should be running OS 4.2.1 or later. For best results have your iPOD set to the playlist you want to listen to before connecting the cable.

Do you have the rev 4 or later operators manual? I think a PDF version is available in the manuals section of this site.

You do not want the RER model. The RHR works better and has the same or better function, some terms have changed however.

The RHR has its quirks, however, e.g. forgets where home is, no way to load POIs, likes to blue screen... all pretty much discussed in the audio/video sub section. You may want to look through the posts there.

I use UConnect all of the time with the RHR. Works well with my DroidX.

Wow....Apparently you haven't read any of the other threads about the 730N RER vs RHR

The UConnect is built in to the 730N RHR
The RHR is newer then the RER with more functionality
It does have Bluetooth support
No iPod cable is supplied with the RHR, just use one of the two USB ports and plug your own cable in

Re: Took delivery yesterday, 730N already an issue

You would have the RHR if built in the last 3 months...the RER is long gone. The RHR works great....been using mine for 3 months now. I know the whole RER/RHR/RBZ etc. thing is a bit confusing...the bottom right corner of the media center should say RHR which is the latest and the greatest...no worries.

Re: Took delivery yesterday, 730N already an issue

Thanks to all for updating this info, and to Cold Case for that excellent link. The RHR appears to be the latest radio. and is now included in the Overland base price, which has been raised to cover it, and then some.

Re: Took delivery yesterday, 730N already an issue

OK, first disclaimer, when I created the post I was operating on 2 hours worth of sleep from a 24 hr bug. The documentation include with my Jeep referred to the former models and capabilities. That is the RHR version did not support Uconnect which would require the RER (I also didn't search the forum for references to this subject).

I can now say with the "bug" out of my system and with 8 hrs of sleep behind me I was able to successfully pair my "crackberry" and yes even the iPod is working.

So everything is now configured in my Jeep and now I just need to put some miles on it.

Thanks to everybody who posted a response.

Regards,
NHman
