Uconnect 8.4 Android System Integration

Has anyone installed this on their JGC? You can easily switch between the Uconnect software and Android. You can also install new apps via Google play and run Google Maps Navigation. Seems that you can integrate your phone's texting - I wonder if the system's hands free mode works with that. Pretty cool, but expensive @ over $500:

That's a good option vs Android Auto...

Re: Uconnect 8.4 Android System Integration

It's neat and a great display of reverse engineering skills.

But is it really added separately as a dual boot or is it a phone mirror ? It seems that it is a real dual boot (after watching the clip a few times). Congratulations to them but I would hope they release more info on how they did it. Where did they find the storage space for dual boot? Does the android portion of the system recognize the USB port and the SD card and can I download music and apps and off-line maps on that or does it download into the jointly shared Uconnect / Android space ? What happened to the factory maps ? I presume one can trim the factory maps down (e.g. North America East vs. West) and make room for Android. What about updates to the OS?

Also, it lacks integration with the rest of the car systems that need to be accessible via UConnect (apart from GPS it seems). While nothing would require immediate access, it will get old quickly having to switch between systems. I tried it with Waze and miracast via Lockpick Air on a longer journey and was not convenient. But I am confident they will be able to tap into more systems and connect to more peripherals like the steering wheel buttons ...

That's what kills it for me.

I don't want to have to keep flipping back and forth just to turn my seat heaters on or off.

Plus, the one failing of base Android is it's an icon based system, not a tree-based system. That means everything requires clicking in multiple times to get to different settings as opposed to popping out further options with an easy back out.

Praying the 2017 Uconnect featuring Android Auto can be ported to current systems... Hell i would even go as far to purchase the hardware if necessary.

Based on that demo, clearly it could. At that point, it could be better integrated since Uconnect would have authorized Canbus access to have controls for the vehicle directly within Android.

The real question is, will they do it?

I doubt it. I'm assuming you'll need to buy new hardware - about $40K-$50K worth, free Jeep included...

I don't think they have any incentive to do so if it will make even a select few people upgrade to a newer model vehicle. Anyone angry they aren't being upgraded will get over it at some point. I'm not sure they'll gain anything by upgrading existing units.

Re: Uconnect 8.4 Android System Integration

I have no hope in the manufacturer doing it. That's not good business haha. I'm hoping for an aftermarket hack.

Once we see the source code for the 2017, I hope it can be adapted for earlier unconnect versions.

That's exactly right. Even though it will be incorporated with Android, I bet that the new 2017 UConnect will have the same safety controls in place that will prevent you from using a lot of the useful functionality - like adding an address into the navigation while driving (this should be a hands free voice feature).

Related to that, they will want to lock things down to preserve the UConnect monthly subscription so that they keep getting a steady flow of income from those that are dependent on their systems. Right now I cannot use the system's voice recognition to reply to text messages because I do not pay for their monthly service, which really frustrates me. Android already has this technology available without a monthly subscription and it is on my phone that is sending the text message.

Re: Uconnect 8.4 Android System Integration

Interesting as i just switched back to Android S7 Edge. Will spend time reviewing this to get better insight.

Just wondering though...is there any aftermarket head units for the Wk2? Ofcourse something that wouldn't support the uconnect app features but as long as it can provide radio, maybe gps and voice commands?

Re: Uconnect 8.4 Android System Integration

It's not dual booted and it is not just mirroring the phone.
Think two computers sharing one monitor.
It's not "reverse" engineered, they did the similar screen hacks available (for mirroring) and stuffed in an android tablet in there.

But at first glance it looks like an older version of Android (much older). Google Maps looks older than Version 4.x (no alternate routes button).

Ahhh, I was right Android 4.4, that is the killer right there. This product has been around for quite some time.
