I promised that I searched for the answer, but I found nothing.

Are there any downsides to getting UConnect 8.4A AM/FM/BT/Access and then paying for NAV hookup? Except for the cost of course. Any missing features, etc...?

Just wondering because I changed my search parameters on the Jeep website to this and I am now seeing a bunch of vehicles in my area that have the option (ORA II) I want that did not show up before.

Many thanks.

Yes there is differences in the navigation. Why would not just pay the lesser amount for the nav unit than paying more later?

Off the top of my head, you lose 3D map options and HD radio.

According to WK2jeeps

"The dealer activated navigation does not include Sensor-assisted GPS or 3D features"

I think the 3D feature they're talking about is the buildings/landscape. When I was in Long Beach last weekend, some of the buildings would show on the map as a 3D model

^ Nevermind...

I just found out the cost to "activate" NAV on an 8.4A (RA3) is $595, and the dealership has to do it...no monthly subscription though.

I should have paid the extra $400 and ordered my 2014 GC with the 8.4AN (RA4) radio.

Still think I'll pay the extra money to have this done at the dealership.

The nav on the RA3 isn't the same as the RA4, few features are different. Not the HK Nav

Anyone know if the 8.4A RA3 will play video files? I know, not condoned while driving, but would be nice for my son to be able to watch movies while we're sitting in a parking lot waiting for my wife to get done grocery shopping, etc.

Another thing missing on the 8.4A is the live traffic. Doesn't show you or tell you where there are incidents and to my knowledge there's no way to get it on the 8.4A. If anyones knows if there's a way, I'd really like to know. I suppose that would be under traffic link on the 8.4AN....

I don't know of a way either. The thing and this is what really gets me is that in the manual that I downloaded (on page 128), it says this:

From the Nav Main Menu, touch the Information softkey
and select one of the following options to view
additional information.
Traffic

Where Am I?

Trip Computer

NOTE:
You can touch the back arrow soft-key to return

to the previous screen or the X soft-key to exit.

Obviousy, I now know that you can't. Very, very disappointed (especially as I sat in traffic for an hour this morning not knowing the problem). OK, that is not entirely true as I looked it up on my phone.

I hope it is ok to post links.

I've since changed my mind on paying the extra $595 to activate NAV on my 8.4A. That price is just too high for a lesser form of NAV that has no traffic ability.

If the price were to drop below $400, then I'd think about it again. But until then, I'll use that $595 and put it towards accessories like wheel locks, front tow hooks, pedal cover kit, cargo & slush mats, and lighted door sills.

I got lucky at my dealers expense when it came to the 8.4A. Originally I went in to the dealer with a 2014 GC Limited, Red, Tan interior in mind. I picked out the one on the lot I wanted which had 8.4AN because I wanted the Nav capability. While I'm waiting in the showroom for the GC to be detailed the sales man comes up and says they have a minor issue. He tells me the porter driving my new GC around back to get detailed ran into another vehicle. So he gives me a loner GC Limited with the 8.4A, no nav. He told me they will have another one in sometime next week. In the meantime I'm starting to like the one they loaned me, it was blue with black but I really liked it. So the dealer waived the $600 upgrade charge plus gave me another detail and a second free tank of gas, it had like 35 miles to empty when it brought it back in. Not sure I'd go back to that dealer again, but it worked out good for me.
