Uconnect at CES 2015

Chrysler shows off smarter UConnect app at CES 2015 - CNET

Quote:
At CES 2015, FCA, the new name for the Fiat-Chrysler group, is showing off its new UConnect smartphone app. With the new app, Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep owners will be able to schedule a health report, locate their cars with their phones, and send destinations to the navigation system remotely.

The vehicle health report is a monthly email showing the status of your car's engine, transmission, suspension and fluid levels. The car can also send an alert for any critical maintenance issues that need immediate attention.

The app will also show you the location of your car -- useful if you're in a busy parking lot or if you've loaned it out. Most useful, you can use the app to search for a destination, then send it to the car. The next time you get in, the navigation system will have that location saved and ready to go.

These new services and app connectivity only work with FCA vehicles fitted with the UConnect 8.4A or 8.4AN head units, each of which feature a large 8.4-inch touchscreen in the dashboard. FCA notes that the new services will only be available on select 2015 Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep models with the UConnect head unit.

The app connectivity joins existing data-connected services in UConnect, such as Yelp, stolen vehicle tracking, Pandora and iHeartRadio.

Models from GM, Ford and other automakers have previously offered similar services, so in this instance, FCA is keeping up with the competition.

You knew that was going to happen as they want to force you to buy a new vehicle. While I like the new Uconnect features they are not enough to make me give up my nicely broken in 2014 Jeep Cherokee Limited that I cusom ordered. Maybe in 10 or 15 years. I kept my last vehicle 15 years and the college kid who bought it is still driving it daily. My one question to Uconnect is this: Since the years before 2015 won't offer as much in Uconnect features will our Uconnect subscriptions be cheaper than those who have 2015 models?

Re: Uconnect at CES 2015

This is very confusing; as when you read through the Uconnect site that talks about the new features, nowhere does it state they'll only be available on "select 2015" models. Instead, it prominently includes the 2014 Grand Cherokee as having Uconnect Access, on a link with the same page that highlights the new features: Pricing and Availability of Uconnect® Access

Re: Uconnect at CES 2015

Uconnect access is hardware in the vehicle plus software on cloud servers. I don't know if the firmware on the hardware will need to be updated to work with the new apps.

Re: Uconnect at CES 2015

Greetings,

See the following thread for more details:

http://www.jeepgarage.org/f73/all-ne...ces-83068.html

IMHO, this will help with the 2014+ Uconnect (8.4 and other systems that the car functions go thru) those who do not want to invest into a lockpick setup. Otherwise, if want to get your smartphone and/or tablet, then best way will be one of the lock pick's. FCA should have included Spotify.

Best for now.

Uconnect at CES 2015

That thread restates the info currently on the UConnect web site, and also states the new features will be available on "select 2015" models - what I and all the other owners of 2014 models who currently subscribe to UConnect Access is, will the new features work on our units also?

Greetings,

Actually the thread came out in the General WK2 section before this thread which this OP posted and by mistake twice.

In any event, according to fellow member Milous:

"Vehicle Finder, Send Destination to Vehicle, Vehicle Health Report and Vehicle Alert will be made available during the first half of 2015 on select 2015 model-year vehicles properly equipped with a 8.4A or 8.4AN system and must be registered or have an active Uconnect Access subscription."

Since the 8.4 headunit is already integrated into the Hi-Speed CAN Bus system, in theory it should have the ability to access the Grand Cherokee system data and perform bi-directional communications with the approved smartphones. For this to happen, the headunit itself has to be updated in it's programming (firmware), unless it sitting their already dormant and the new app preforms the access.

Based upon MIlous's statement quoted above, my interoperation is for the Vehicle Finder, Vehicle Health Report and Vehicle Alert to work in selected 2015 models, additional physical connections (maybe a parallel connection with the OBM-II port) had to be made to pull this off. It could also mean the processor in the headunit also had to be updated since it already has been established in the forum by others it is currently slow and has a lagging problem. Send Destination to Vehicle could be just implemented by the updated app without a need for a firmware update (who know with FCA anymore).

As another member pointed in the other thread and I find it the same, you read the Uconnect website and makes it seam it just an app upgrade. Too much speculation here on this issue of whether the 2014's qualify for the update. Hopefully Milous can chime in here to provide the clarifications as he has often done in the past.

Best for now.

Re: Uconnect at CES 2015

ahh nice, yet another reason to hate my 2014...
I wonder how much more they will try to charge people for "uconnect access" each month? Its already such an incredible rip off/waste of money. Even with all these new features I would still never pay that much... oh well. 1.5 years left lol

Re: Uconnect at CES 2015

when I first logged into the Mopar Owner Connect website in March 2014 (when I bought the Jeep) It knew my tire pressure and actual mileage. Shortly after, that information disappeared from their website.

I am hopeful that the updates will work on our 2014's because of what I saw. If I knew it was something new I would have taken a screen shot but I thought it was normal.. until it was gone.

Re: Uconnect at CES 2015

Well, I'm keeping an eye on this update. I would really love doing the map push as a convenience. The vehicle diagnostics would be nice to as a monitoring tool.

Oh well.....

I saw that too. It advised me of any check engine light too. Often wondered why it disappeared
