Undependable GPS Performance

We just finished an 1,800 mile trip from Maine to New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island.

Less than 100 miles into New Brunswick, on a 4 lane divided highway (Rt 1), I got the dreaded GPS message "You are entering an area with unverified roads". Rt 1 disappeared from the map. The car icon appeared to be traveling in an area with no roads. The route recalculated and moved over to a different parallel highway. The speed limit changed and I got the warning that I was exceeding the limit (which I was not). This continued for maybe 10 minutes. Then the problem went away. I think that the problem cleared when the parallel road got close to the area where Rt 1 was (my car icon).

When this happened again, I no longer trusted the GPS and I got my Garmin GPS out and stuck it on my windshield for the rest of my 6 day trip. I got the "unverified data" message 4 times on this trip and the road disappeared every time. My Garmin never experienced a problem. Most times, I had identical destinations in the two GPS's.

In two different areas, the Jeep GPS started directing me to take every dirt road to the left. After passing one road, it would recalculate and direct me to the next dirt road. After a few of these, I stopped the Jeep navigation and just used my Garmin.

I still get these "unverified data" messages on 100 year old streets in my home town.

Though we like all other features of our Jeep, the navigation function is slow, difficult to interact with, low quality display, and undependable. I will not go on any long trip without taking my Garmin.

Jeep needs to make major improvements to the nav function and apply it to all of us who trusted Jeep and bought early 2014 models.

Tom

That made a huge difference for me. After updating, no more unverified road messages.

I have been having the same problem as Tom, but just thought the GPS was inferior and have just dealt with the messages as I know where I am going anyways (each time it does that, I think to myself "And Jeep thinks this is better than the Garmin's they put in the 13s").

The update has been on my list of things to get, but I've sort of been in the attitude of "what ain't broken, don't fix" so I never made it a priority to do. Thanks for pointing me in this direction that it might (or might not) help.

I agree. The navigation is not reliable. I recently dove from San Diego to Los Angeles and it kept telling me to get off the freeway whenever there was a little traffic. it also showed at one point that i was driving on a road that was parallel to the freeway when I was still on the freeway. Now I always use my iPhone for navigation because I don't trust the jeeps nav. it's disappointing to have paid for navigation when a free iPhone app works way better.

Re: Undependable GPS Performance

Well - I sent an email to Jeep Customer Service. They replied and gave me a phone number for uConnect support (1-877-855-8400).

I called uConnect and was surprised that the lady immediately saw my previous emails. We discussed the problems in general. She put me on hold, talked to a uConnect specialist for a few minutes and then got back on the line. Fist of all - she was extremely pleasant and sounded sincerely interested in helping me. It was a very good conversation. Here is what she told me.

- In Jeep's initial email reply to me, they told me that Garmin made the Jeep GPS. The uConnect specialist corrected that. The Nav software and map are from Navteq. The software is Navteq's Nav N Go system.

- The uConnect specialist had not heard of a problem with the Nav system displaying "entering area with unverified data" nor that it caused faulty routing.

- Regarding my problems with the Nav system directing me down dirt side roads in Canada, she didn't know if the Jeep maps included valid Canadian roads. The lady at uConnect wanted to know if my Jeep maps were old. I told her that it appeared that they were at least a year old but that I did not believe that this was a cause of my recent problems because the roads did appear on the map.

- Regarding updated maps, she did not know when an updated map was going to be released. She stated that Navteq was in control of that and Navteq was responsible for Nav software updates also

- The lady did capture my information, my problems, and my concern that I could not rely on my Jeep Nav system for reliable navigation. Again, she sounded quite concerned and said she would be forwarding the information "to Corporate".

- My final concern is: Are our Nav issues getting to the correct people within Jeep and to Navteq. It didn't seem so to me. I hope my discussions with them help improve the system.

Re: Undependable GPS Performance

Isnt the Nav system in the Jeep provided by Garmin?

I've found factory navs to be far inferior to the hand held units. My friends GL450 took us 20 miles out of the way to the completely wrong area this weekend (despite us checking the address over and over) to which he proceeded to note that wasnt even as bad as the Nav in his GS350...

I am quite sure the Jeep GPS is not Garmin.

For the 2013 Jeep's, the GPS is Garmin (See: 2013 Grand Cherokee | Uconnect, Sirius Radio | Jeep). For 2014, the GPS is not Garmin.

Re: Undependable GPS Performance

I searched around a bit, seems to be a bit of confusion whether its Garmin or Harmon providing nav... uConnect guide references Garmin but that might not be the case.

I'll post this again:
Jeep Grand Cherokee WK2 - 2014 model year radios
It says Harmon. Believe it, or not.
