upgrade rear camera?

curious if anyone has replaced the rear camera. I absolutely hate the quality of the rear camera on this thing. My explorer and my edge had fantastic image quality, and at night looked crystal clear even with mediocre lighting.

My jeep has full led reverse lights and the camera still looks ok at best.

I guess I am looking for a direct plug and play style aftermarket camera to replace it with.

Re: upgrade rear camera?

I was wondering this as well, my 4runner's camera was much better quality, too. I was looking at another post to replace the camera, but yeah, it needs an upgrade.

Re: upgrade rear camera?

Interestingly...I find the rear camera of my MY12 to be excellent, both in full sun and low-light. And that's by about a mile over our other vehicle made in 2011.

You might be able to get a better sensor, but the screen resolution will be the same, however.

That's sort of what I was thinking. I don't know if I consider it an optics issue or a resolution issue. Just seems off for some reason.

Also I might put a mudflat under and over mine. Or maybe a snow cone paper around it lol. When it's cold and snowing I always see icicles and when it's raining it's impossible to see out of when i put it in reverse. I know that's perfectly normal, I just lick my finger and wipe it off once a trip or two. Just would love to get it protected from the elements a little better hahah

Re: upgrade rear camera?

I've gotten into the habit of wiping the lens off with frequency during foul weather and the ACC dome at the same time), but the nature of airflow on these vehicles unfortunately causes stuff to build up back there. It's not just the Jeep...the same thing happens on the Subaru and other vehicles I've driven, such as rentals. Nature of the beast...

Figure this out? I don't currently have one installed at all and would like to simply use an aftermarket camera instead of OEM. If what you are saying is possible, so would what I want to do.

The easiest way to test if it would be possible would be to pull the radio out of the dash (pull off trim, take out 4 screws and done). And then take any kind of video input with RCA and hook it in place of the backup camera. You could then see if the input would work - if it did, then you could buy a camera and go from there.

I just checked the wiring diagrams for the camera...it's not looking good. I wish it were as simple as an RCA plug. I guess you can try splicing the cables if you're crafty but I don't think it'll just be plug n play RCA

Where did you get those wiring diagrams from? Is that a paid site?

Re: upgrade rear camera?

I've noticed a significant improvement in image quality between my 14 and 16 under all lighting conditions. I also notice that my back up lights are a lot more visible on the screen. I wonder if they changed something?

It would be great to have a retractable camera like some VW's

Why? That's just something else to break.

Re: upgrade rear camera?

Depending on the year of your jeep, you could probably just use a newer OEM camera and get a big improvement. The backup camera on my 2011 RAM went out last summer and I ended up ordering a replacement from a dealer off of ebay. I noticed that the part number had changed, but some quick "googling" showed that they had just changed the part over the years and it was still compatible. Once I plugged it in I found that not only did I gain the colored backup lines (something that the original did not have) but the picture was much crisper and at night was actually quite good vs the abysmal night performance before. I think it cost me around $80 and took 20 minutes to swap out on the pickup. Before you start splicing in an aftermarket one it might be worth a shot.
