Upgrading 9 speaker Alpine to Harman Kardon System.

I recently traded in my 2013 Pathfinder which had the Bose system with 2 Subwoofers for a 2015 Grand Cherokee Overland. I love everything about it, except for the sound. It's a very noticeable downgrade from the Pathfinder's Bose system. Can I upgrade the Alpine to the Harman Kardon System. Or what do you guys recommend. Thank you very much!

If you haven't had that factory installed prior to your purchase then it would be hard to upgrade to the Harmon. You would be better off finding some nice aftermarket sound upgrades that suits your listening needs.

Is there a system that most of you guys favor as far as upgrading the Alpine system? Thanks.

That's all a matter of taste and budget. Stop by some shops and see what speakers sound good to you and what head unit appeals to and your tastes in the music you listen to.

Re: Upgrading 9 speaker Alpine to Harman Kardon System.

The speakers are a pretty easy upgrade. I have a 2014 Limited with the factory subwoofer. I recently replaced the door speakers with new ones from Crutchfield and it made for a huge improvement in sound quality......I didn't use the cheapest nor the most expensive, but went for mid-price plug-n-play that would fit the factory openings. I used 6x9" three way JBL's in the front doors and 5.25" Nakamichi's in the rear doors. I might look into upgrading the factory subwoofer in the cargo area, haven't researched that yet. But I'm pretty happy with it as it is now. It sounds much better than my wife's Land Rover with the factory Harmon/Kardon system FWIW. The factory speakers were really cheap looking and feeling/lighter compared to the new ones from Crutchfield. Once I had them out in my hand I was surprised they had sounded as good as they did.....

That sounds great thanks. For the front speakers did you have to replace the tweeters as well or just the speakers?

Re: Upgrading 9 speaker Alpine to Harman Kardon System.

I did not replace the door tweeters, but I might get around to that as well. I just did the four main speakers in each door to start. But yes, that made for such an improvement I might do the front door tweeters next. In looking at the Crutchfield site, they have tweeters that are a direct fit for the front doors. The tweeters in the rear cargo area, they do NOT have a direct fit for. You would have to modify the trim panel in some way.

If you haven't used Crutchfield before, they send great illustrated instructions specific to your car, as well as any wiring/connection adapters as part of the price. I have used them for lots of cars going back to high school in the 1980's.

I prefer things that go in easy and look stock, so I would not mess with the cargo tweeters. Those cargo area trim panels were also not installed well on mine from the factory, and it took me a lot of messing with them to line up all the hidden tabs, and get them to install correctly and stay tight, so I'd be hesitant to rip all that out.

Crutchfield also has a JL sub with enclosure that fits the factory area in the right rear of the cargo area ($699). If you have a factory sub, you have to remove it and this JL unit comes in a black carpeted fiberglass enclosure that looks great in the pictures. If you had an all tan interior that would be less than desirable, but that area is black carpet from the factory on a black interior or if, like mine, your interior is tan with black carpet.

The factory sub amp cannot power this JL unit so you need an amp too ($299 or so) and related wiring etc. So it's over $1,000 without labor.

It's not clear to me whether the JL sub (or some other brand) might could fit in the factory sub enclosure if you have one already.....that might be a nice/cheaper option, as the JL $699 unit price is about half sub, half for the enclosure. If you have a GC without the factory sub, it's a slick factory looking enclosure on this JL.

But, behind our carpeted panel there on the RH side of the cargo area with the chrome ring, we have a (inferior, I'm sure) plastic or fiberglass enclosure. Looks to me like you can keep all the factory box and trim and just replace the subwoofer itself like any other speaker. You might be able to use the factory amp as well, or, use an amp that could take advantage of the factory wiring. That would take a call to Crutchfield to talk to them about it.....

But six new door speakers is a good/easy/inexpensive place to start.

I also see references elsewhere on this site that the front center dash speaker at the base of the windshield is a super easy job, just pop off the grille and install. I might try that as well.

Re: Upgrading 9 speaker Alpine to Harman Kardon System.

Why did you go with two different brand speakers in the front and rear doors??

Greetings,

Their are several threads generated here in the forum about this topic. So have tried a new sub drive and modified the enclosure. Others have done it and gone later to the Stealthbox.

I really thing it is a matter of personal opinion on how somebody wants to listen too the bass. For me, i would rather have the right enclosure to be matched to the right driver to get that deep low bass. If you are keeping the JGC for a long period of time, then I think it is worth making the investment and getting the right unit instead of playing with the factory enclosure.

BTW, I was down in Charlotte, NC last week sighting with my JGC. Nice area, I did not have enough time to see everything. But, I did get to go to the NASCAR Hall of Frame and the Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Best for now.
