At times, the music sounds great. It's just the amp that kills it.

I think the stock ones may be more than substantial enough for me for a while
if the amp will make that big of a difference on it's own.
well if you go that route, be sure not to get an amp thats too much higher in power over the stock one or your gonna blow the speakers

That's something I didn't consider actually and I do want to have room for upgrading down the road. So that could be problematic. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

Any idea what the stock amp power output is?

No idea brother, but some one with a factory amp will know.

The focals seem to be a hot item in this thread. Lets all check for the best pricing for them. Start with speaker replacement first, wait about 25-50 hours for break in then take a look at an amp if necessary. Did anyone replace the rear pillar speakers, the ones above the back seats?

I'd stick with my stock amp if I didn't think that was a part of my distortion problem. But I understand all of that wasn't entirely directed at me...

None of that was directed at anyone,it was just something put out there in case someone had some info on a great deal on focals. I've always said start first with new speakers, play the media that you like and break them in then evaluate whether an amp is needed, everyone's ears are different of course.

That is how I built my budget system. Upgraded to kicker ks speakers all around on the stock deck and no sub or amps. That was an immediate upgrade. Then I added the kicker l5 and amp to the stock deck using a loc. That filled the lows nicely. Then I changed decks and with that came a second amp to run the six speakers. It may be low budget and kicker but it sounds amazing in my WK1.

FYI: the OEM speaker hole is 150mm and the plastic which would secure them is 3mm thick if you wanted to pass on using adapters.

As with most replacements these once again made a huge positive difference to the clarity and as with all HAT speakers, a nice mid bass kick!

Here are a few pics (used a little too much sealant in places but better than not enough). Also, I noticed the rear harness is indeed reverse polarity as per wiring diagrams (unless they are wrong). I had adapter plugs so I just went with the factory setting and it sounds great. Not sure I can be bothered changing it to test the other way...
Very interesting and informative thread. Thanks to all who posted their experiences here.

exlr8...... I see you used some sealant to mount the rear door adapter plates. Is that necessary, or is that what a quality installer would do when using an adapter plate. What sealant did you use, ordinary silicone or something a little better like a 3M marine grade sealant like this?

Greetings,

The better installers use both sealant and some sort of mechanical fasting. The sealant also acts as a decoupling agent, so that any vibrations or impact resonance is not heard. When you put it over dynomat or anything equivalent to dynomat, you get a full sound barrier system. This is similar procedure when you are doing hi-tech sound rooms. Any exterior grade sealant is recommended. IMO, the 3M, if you have the JGC near salt water constantly, it does not hurt.

Best for now.
