upgrading speakers Is it a plug&play issue ?

Want to upgrade my Laredo speakers with aftermarket speakers, as I read that a great difference is made even without replacing the amps.
Can someone recommend good front and rear sets, with the minor adjustments needed.
the second issue is I want to replace them myself but have no audio installation training, I can disconnect terminals and connect new ones, just it.
I understand that exposing the original speakers inst that easy, Maybe I am wrong, I was directed to the PDF wiring diagrams of the Audio in the wk2s webpage but it is not straightforward at all.
Is there some clear manual how to expose the front and rear speakers, including the front tweeters?

Re: upgrading speakers Is it a plug&play issue ?

I'd recommend RE audio. As far as installing is yourself it it very easy..Pop the door panel off, don't be scared but be slow doing it. Unscrew the screws and disconnect the wire harness that is connect to the back of speaker, then take it out n put in the new speakers. It should be a direct connect if not the worse case scenerio is you are going to have to do some wire work, but even that is easy...hope this helps.

Re: upgrading speakers Is it a plug&play issue ?

Thanks,
Do you mean only the mesh covers can be taken out or should I take the entire door cover for that ?
Should I use a pry plastic tool for that or what ?
What about wiring a cross over for between the front tweeters and the midranges ? will this be a difficult task ?

Re: upgrading speakers Is it a plug&play issue ?

not sure how the WK2 door set up is, but I'm sure the speaker is bolted to the door and if thats the case they yeah the door cover should come off. I you can get to the speaker through the mess than you just take it off. Usually the speakers are in the door frame so try that first.

As far as the tweeter goes usually the cross overs are in different location so you wounldnt have to worry about messing with it and you would as well unbolt and replace it.

Shouldnt be to hard to install. About 15-20 minutes per door if you get it the first try.

Re: upgrading speakers Is it a plug&play issue ?

Thanks again, ill try to pull those meshes out.
Do you think a 60Watts RMS Focal 6.5" front and back will get along well with the main power amp ? I do not want to get into an external amp installation.
BTW, Loved your car, it looks a killer GC!

Re: upgrading speakers Is it a plug&play issue ?

You need to remove the whole door panel to access the speakers. I highly recommend this tool to ease the removal of the door panel:

The stock front door speakers are components, which means separate mid-range woofers and separate tweeters. The front door woofers are 6"x9" and the tweeters are 1". I strongly recommend going with an aftermarket component kit as to replace both the stock front door woofers and tweeters.

For the front you can go with 5-1/4 or 6-1/2 woofers but would then need a 5-1/4 or 6-1/2to 6"x9" bracket. 6"x9" component kits exists, but are rare.

I personally went with Alpine's SPR-50C component kit for the front doors.

With regards to the rear doors, they accept 6-1/2 or 6-3/4 full range speakers. You may have to drill new mounting holes or go with a bracket like this one

If you stick with the stock speaker wire, then I recommend getting this Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge speaker wiring harness which makes for plug and play installation of aftermarket speakers.

Since you are new to this, I strongly recommend you check out Crutchfield.com and use their Outfit My Car tool to find out what fits and what brackets/wiring harness you need.

Re: upgrading speakers Is it a plug&play issue ?

I just finished the read speaker install
And it is easy! The rear door just needs a little force to come off, remember slow and steady. Rage and i have already posted pics of our install that you can find. Idk how to post a link yet but look in out post and its there. Id ask are you gonna run subs or not? If not i would run a better quality speaker in the door if you are, i would look at a good high and mid speaker and let a good sub provide all the bass. if you run your door speakers to its own amp and the sub to its own you will be happy with the results. Ask if you have any more questions.

Re: upgrading speakers Is it a plug&play issue ?

Thanks for the usefull links.
About a subwoofer,
The JL stealthbox is quite expensive for me, i am thinking of the Rockford Shallow box which is only about 4-5" deep.
For the front I was thinking on FOCAL 165A 6.5" 60 RMS component
For the rear FOCAL 165CVX 6.5" 60 RMS Coax 2 way.

Will those exhibit a dramatic sound upgrade without an external AMP ?
Or maybe the main power will not kick them at all ?

Re: upgrading speakers Is it a plug&play issue ?

The front and rears would probably be fine running off the stock amp, but the subwoofer would suffer. You may want to look into an amplified sub. Something like the Infinity Basslink (http://www.crutchfield.com/p_108BASS...slink&skipvs=T) would be a good match.

I'm having some Focal's installed front and rear tomorrow (IS 165 and IC 165). I listened to the 165A's for the front and thought they were good but then I listened to the IS 165's and they were significantly better, for only about $50 more. I know Crutchfield says they won't fit, but my installer is confident they will.

I think the 165CVX is overkill for the rear. Spend your money on the front speakers, that's what will make the biggest sound improvment. If you really want good sound (assuming they fit), go with the PS 165's in the front and then save a little on the rear with something like the IC 165.

Just my .02. If you wait until Friday, I'll have my Jeep back and let you know how they fit.

Re: upgrading speakers Is it a plug&play issue ?

Thanks for the tip.
If i go for the ext. amp should I get a five channel to feed all of the components or only a mono one for the sub ? I guess there should be a price difference and the 5ch is more expensive, for the same level.

If you are going to add an external amp, I would go with a 5 channel. The sound difference will be pretty significant.
