Using Remote Start Smart Phone App ?

I've downloaded the remote start app into my Smartphone. It will also lock and unlock the doors, as well as sound the horn and flash the lights to find your vehicle in a crowded parking lot. It works in conjunction with the U-Connect 8.4.

It takes a few minutes for it to work. I tried it this morning, and from when my phone said it was issuing the command, to the time the engine actually started, was 2 to 3 minutes.

Does anyone know what actually transpires during this time? I realize this is transmitted back and forth over the Internet, but I was wondering what actual transmission takes place from phone to wherever, then to the car to start?

The phone app sends send a cellular signal from your cell phone to your Jeep, which essentially has a cell phone built in running on Sprint (to my understanding, and this is in the US market, not sure about other countries). You have to have the UConnect service activated and working, of course. Then it's a series of self checks to make sure the vehicle is stationary, trans in park, doors locked, etc, and then it starts. This is basically the gist of it.

So what would happen if I sent both a command to start the engine, AND unlock the doors at the same time? Would the app know to start the engine before unlocking the doors? Or would it not unlock the doors if the engine was running? Without the key FOB in your possession, even with the engine running, you wouldn't be able to move the vehicle because it won't let you take it out of park.

Yes. I can remote start the vehicle with both the key FOB, as well as by using the Smartphone App with the U-Connect. However, after my one year free trial, the remote start feature with the Smartphone will go away, unless I renew the U-Connect contract. As of now I have no plans to do so. The phone start feature is really nothing more than a novelty toy to play with. No way I'm going to pay close to $30.00 a month to keep it.

Re: Using Remote Start Smart Phone App ?

I wouldnt overload the system. The uconnect is already finicky as it is, I doubt it would handle two requests at once.

However you are correct. The vehicle can not move unless the fob is present. So technically you could start the car, wait a few minutes, and then send the unlock signal if you needed to wait in your vehicle without the fob for some reason

That's probably a good idea. I don't need to create any problems with this thing. Besides, if you're in a store and it's hot out, you can start the engine while you're checking out. You don't need to unlock the doors because they'll automatically unlock as you approach the vehicle and grab the handle. It's pointless to unlock the doors before you get there.

I don't know. I let my free year of UConnect expire as the ~ $25/month is too much for something I rarely used. Why don't you try it and tell us?

Re: Using Remote Start Smart Phone App ?

I believe i have tried this. Think both failed but i wouldn't doubt that one would be accepted and the 2nd denied.

Worst case scenario, it'll explode .

I pay $14.99 for it. ONce it goes up i'll threaten to cancel and or cancel.

Re: Using Remote Start Smart Phone App ?

I had a very long discussion with a UConnect technician today, as my new 2015 GC would not accept any commands initiated by the smartphone app, or by the UConnect Web Site.

The command starts at your phone (or on the web, if you use the UConnect Site). It is processed on UConnect's Sephora system, then sent by UConnect via cellular to the cellular receiver in the GC.

It is a two way communication between your GC and UConnect's Sephora servers, so this is how the Smartphone App. ultimately knows that the GC received and executed the command. UConnect then notifies the smartphone app, and if selected in initial app settings, sends you an email or text, telling you that the command was received and executed by the GC.

After studying the logs at their end, they figured out what was wrong, and fixed it. My GC now works as designed, with regard to remote commands sent by the smartphone app, or by using UConnect's web site.

No wonder it takes almost 3 minutes for the thing to start!

I let my brother drive on a trip but I kept the fob in my pocket. We stopped at a department store and I went inside for 5-10 minutes. He was still able to drive up to the entrance to pick me up without the fob. Not sure how that worked but it did.
