Also when I am in severe weather, the app never says or alerts you to anything....
My wife's car, 2011 Nissan with the same app alerts you within 30 sec of startup if there are any weather alerts or severe weather within 50-75 of your current location wherever you may be in the US... Shouldn't this unit do that also?

I too have noticed that it doesn't seem to have data downloaded in advance. Seems to me when we call up the app it first displays the map then it goes looking for the data. Since it's a one way broadcast over the satellite (mixed in with traffic data, movie times, gas prices, sports scores/headlines, etc, etc)- it takes some period of time to loop around and get to the weather map data. So it waits to draw the radar until it gets around to downloading fresh data.
It seems when the key is off the thing goes into a "too deep" a sleep and doesn't keep receiving sat data nor keep a reasonable connection to 3g (why does it take several minutes for it to connect to the 3g to get a remote start request- but that's another post).
And also- even when on- it might not be smart enough to cache the data in the background so you can have the last transmission displayed as soon as you fire up the app.
Sounds like a 5+ year old Nissan is smart enough to continue to receive data in the background so you get timely information.
It's kind of indicative of the poor integration of the whole system and the way it makes horrible use of background data and/or the 2-way modem from sprint. XM/Chrysler/Sprint should work it out so the radio can send a request for time specific local data (traffic or weather) via the 3g modem to XM and then xm should pull out the local slice of requested data and send it back instantly to the radio over 3g. If could get periodic updates over the satellite broadcast once it's "primed" so the next time period gets updated that way or its ready with data if you drive into a new area.
The Uconnect 8.4 is "this close" (holding thumb and finger right next to each other) to being awesome but they just cant get all the pieces together.
