730N RER has Dead Reckoning, Voice programming of Nav unit, Split Screen, Harmon software, and fixed 30gb hard drive. 430N RHB does not have any of these except the 30GB hard drive and it can be supplimented by the addition of Flash USB drives making the storage capacity of the 430N RHB basically unlimited, and of course the Garmin software. The 730N RER is a media center that is several years old. A 2007 model I believe, where as the 430N RHB is a new 2010 model. The general feeling is that if you don't need the special features I mentioned above for the 730N RER, then the 430N RHB is probably superior in that the Garmin software is superior to the Harmon. I personally like the unlimited capacity of the storage in the 430N RHB, but it would not be the main reason. The main reason is the Garmin software. I have used a Garmin stand alone unit for some time and I really like the lane assist and speed limit information it gives. My stand alone garmin also tells you how fast you are going which is a nice check of your cars speedometer. It may, but I have not read anywhere that the 730N will give this information. Maybe someone that has actually used a 730N RER can tell us for sure.

Re: Whats the diffrence in Nav radios?

I tend to wonder if the speed indicator would be used in this version of the Garmin software since its redundancy would show the inaccuracy of the speedometer. Most speedos are optimistic about the present speed, being off by 3-5 mph to give some leeway for not getting a speeding ticket.

Re: Whats the diffrence in Nav radios?

A case can also be made that the speedometer in the GPS unit just isn't all THAT accurate. People often believe them to be far more accurate than they are.

GPS units for vehicle use don't show your actual location as per the satellite fix, they correlate that location from the fix to a point on a map, and that point on the map may be several dozen yard from your actual location. Just watching the map view while driving will show this- it is not unusual to see it place you on a nearby road or ramp, only to snap back to your actual road once the other location becomes impossible (it is outside the actual error range of the GPS fix).

Once upon a time I was on I-64 in southern Indiana, driving westbound in the eastbound lanes due to a construction detour. The GPS showed me in the "correct" westbound lanes because they were within the margin for error and clearly I couldn't be driving the wrong way down that street. If it can get your location wrong by a hundred yards, I wouldn't trust the speed readout any more than I would the speedometer on the vehicle. Better to just put it right at 60mph on the freeway and have a passenger with a stopwatch.

Re: Whats the diffrence in Nav radios?

One thing before this thread dies.

Is there no one reading the posts on this forum that actually has experience with the 730N RER or the 430N RHB? Myself, and it looks like others on here, are just basing their opinions and information on what has been printed about these units, and not real world experience. It is too late for me, because I already have an Overland on order, and since I did not opt for the 730N I am expecting to get the 430N, but for someone still trying to decide which media center they want, real world information would be helpful.

Question Re: Whats the diffrence in Nav radios?

I also find it interesting that the Owner's Guide does not mention the use of CDs or DVD-As at all except to say they are available to load the harddrive. I've checked other sources also, and there's no mention of navigating a disc to listen to it. I imagine you can do this, but haven't tried it out at the dealer yet. I'd ask for others experience with this question also. Does the DVD-Audio surround mix play properly within the vehicle with either of these units?

Aren't DVD-A considered Hi-Def like SACDs (super-audio CDs)?

DVD-Audio was a rival (and incompatible) format to SACD. It seemed to have more market penetration, but the market preferred convenience of consumption (compressed digital files) to higher fidelity that was harder to play. DVD-A and SACD didn't lend themselves to ripping for use on a digital player.

My wife's Acura has a DVD-A player. We've never used it for that. Heck, I haven't used an actual disc for music in years between using an iPod and satellite radio. Especially in a vehicle, where the messier and noisier acoustic environment works against high fidelity playback.

Oh, and when my Overland finally shows up with the 430N I'll be willing to play guinea pig for others if they have questions.

True, and not to mention the limited music selection when using those formats. Pretty cool though that it is an option considering that home players for these Hi-Fi formats range from several hundred to several thousand dollars.

Re: Whats the diffrence in Nav radios?

Perhaps I am in more trouble than I thought, I just shot an email to my deal and asked if I have a 730 or 430 coming in my Overland, (since when I ordered it back in june there was no choices). His reply was "I dont understand the question?)

OH CRAP, I said
