Re: Why Your Car Won’t Get Remote Software Updates Anytime Soon

But after a year on this forum I know that Jeep is the only one requiring all these dealer visits. Or as some would say, being subjected to them. That article must be make believe since it indicates other manufacturers are going through the same thing.

Who'da thunk it.

Practices from Tesla will make all auto companies modernize in this way too!

Re: Why Your Car Won’t Get Remote Software Updates Anytime Soon

I like Tesla's approach, a lot like what you get with your iPhone or Android. You get a message saying an update is going to be applied overnight you acknowledge it and voila, update applied over night.

There will be more and more uptake over the years, its taken hold in the mobile industry with regular releases for the next exciting OS from Apple, Google, etc. Cars will get there too as long as you get new and improved features like you get with your mobile devices.

If not over the air, at least giving end users the ability to do the update themselves is a big advantage in my opinion - no need to go to the dealer for them to give me a confused look. Does anybody know other manufactures that do user initiated upgrades a la uConnect?

dont hold your breath... until all these systems are running under 4g (or faster) with someone footing the data bill (probably the customer) there is no way. The file sizes are too big at the moment.

i say... 2017 we see the first normal cars doing this

Don't use cellular network and incur data charges. Your car pulls into your garage, connects to your Wi-Fi network, then download and install.

Still gonna have to fight the dealer sales force. They LIKE IT when you stroll into the showroom while you're waiting for little recalls like these.

Who'da thunk it.
I added the part in blue, for completeness.
Just as Chrysler allows certain updates to be installed by the end user, probably some will also trickle down the OTA pathway.
But taking away the dealership experience and doing upgrades OTA or as end-user downloadables, that is not going to happen. First of all it is a union killing endeavor. Second, dealerships need to attract you in the showroom (while you wait 2 hours for the 10 min software reflash), to present you new inventory, new merchandise, new accessories. Thirdly, it is also a matter of liability and controlling associated risks. You wouldn't want the MILF across the street re-flashing the ABS module before she takes the toddler to kindergarten. Some may want her to do some flashing...but not re-flashing a safety system on the car.

If it wasn't for this forum, I'd never know of any sort of updates! I have to wring the info out of my dealer, then all he has to offer is the long time I'll have to wait as the update takes "hours and hours."

I look forward to remote updates!
