Wind Noise

Yesterday I was using the vehicles Bluetooth while on a call with my mother (never too old to call mom!). She told me that it sounded like I was driving with my windows down (I wasnt). She stated that it sounded like there was a lot of background noise on the call.

Has anyone else found their jeep to have a lot of wind noise? I had a 2014 Limited before my current 2015 Overland and remember it being a lot quieter. Even my mom remembers being on a call and asking me if I was driving because she couldnt hear any background noise. Could the tires have anything to do with it, the 2014 had the 18 inch rims while the overland has the larger 20"

Re: Wind Noise

It could merely have been the quality of your wireless connection...just because there are 4-5 bars doesn't mean that the connection is the best in some circumstances. The extra noise could come from a number of things. But if it's consistently bad, then you might want to have your audio system checked.

The size of your wheels is pretty much irrelevant relative to road noise...it's the tires that come into play there. Type, tread wear, inflation, road surface you are on, etc., all play the real role for that.

Re: Wind Noise

I meant to imply that the size of the rim would have an effect on the size of the tire (I probably could have worded that one better).

The Jeep only has 4500 miles on it so the tires are basically new(ish). I dont know if the thicker tires on the 18" rim would make that substantial of a noise difference than the thickness of the tires on the 20" rim. Im sure it all plays a part

Re: Wind Noise

The OEM tire size for both the 18" and 20" wheels is identical at ~30.6" in diameter. In general, it's the tire tread characteristics that are going to affect noise, not size.

Re: Wind Noise

Every GC I've had, people complain that there's a lot of background noise when on a hands free call.

Re: Wind Noise

I haven't had any complaints about noise (wind or otherwise) while on a hands free cell phone call in my 2015 Overland. Nor did I get any complaints about the 2012 Overland I had.

Its the tread on the tires that makes noise, but even the Latitudes were pretty quiet on the '14. It could be the bluetooth between your phone and the vehicle [or just noisy cell service] unless you hear significant road noise from inside the vehicle.

Even Nokian studs aren't noisy enough to bother phone calls, and I keep my phone on my hip holder most of the time when driving.

Me neither. Even with an old Blackberry Torch and AT&T cell service, regularly get on calls and even Raindance conferences.
