11 months 22,700 miles first oil change

Actually first DIY after the dealer's 4 freebies. What a pleasure changing the top-mounted filter element instead of a messy cartridge. Almost zero spillage and damn near foolproof. Hat's off to ChryCo.

I agree. I had a bottom cartridge on a Ford 2.3L, and hated it. There was a huge mess everytime. I also only changed mine once -- since I had freebies for 1 year. It was a breeze. I'm actually anxious for the next one.

Re: 11 months 22,700 miles first oil change

I stuff rags around the filter housing before I remove it. On my 1st "free" oil change, the dealer dumped the contents of the housing plus about another 1/4 quart of clean oil over the top of the engine during the change. Smelled it on the way home. Took me 2 hours of cleaning to get all the spilled oil out of the crevices on the top of the engine. Poor design, if you ask my opinion. If you do not use care and fill the oil slowley, it will overflow the filler tube as well (I fill using the larger 5-quart jugs, works better from 1-quart bottles but Synthetic oil costs too much that way). On my wifes GM, I have never spilled any oil in 80K miles of changes.

I don't see how one could mess up with removing the top of the filter housing unless he didn't drain the oil from the pan first. With the filler tube, it's fairly small so I use a funnel. Zero drips, and I filled it with a 5+ quart jug.

Re: 11 months 22,700 miles first oil change

^ What he said. I used rags on my first change -- as caution, and as the "official" procedure states. I didn't lose a drop. I always use a screened funnel to fill, so it's much slower than the filler tube.

Re: 11 months 22,700 miles first oil change

Also there is no reason to use synthetic oil. These engines are designed for regular oils up to an 8000 mile interval, monitored by the vehicle computer. Synthetics are for extended change intervals in engines equipped with the monitoring and filtering systems to take advantage of that. For instance in my wife's '12 BMW the interval is an incredible 15,000 miles, and the system monitors both engine load over time and fluid levels. I imagine the filters are expensive. There is also no dip-stick.

By the way try using Wix filters. They are made here in NC, the best quality, cheaper than some of the big names that are made who knows where.
