2011 WK2 Roof rack Direct Mount

Sorry if this has been posted. I searched and didn't find anything but I am wanting to fab my own very low profile roof rack and want your guys opinion on direct mounting it to the rails rather than what I have seen of the huge towers mounting to rails then the rack mounting to them or a basket sitting on cross rails... I am looking for a rack that is maybe 2-3" above the rail total height.

Thoughts on mounting.... as soon as I get the sketches done I will post them!

I am wanting to model it off the Gobi stealth rack... that rack is 85% what I want but also costs $1500.... So I think I can DIY and get 100% what I want and save a few bucks... The gobi rack direct mounts but you have to remove the rails. I am hoping to keep them and the rack sit between them but I don't know if that is possible.

Since you are fabricating your own you could do anything you wanted....

There is a stickie about roof racks for wk2.....

Keep in mind that pre-fab racks have benn tested for wind noise.
You could end up building something that howls like crazy.

Have you taken your rails off to see how they are mounted to the roof?
If i where doing custom, i would ditch the factory rail and direct mount to the roof. It would be a lot cleaner looking and you could always go back to OEM rails.

thanks! I hadn't thought about the wind noise. That is also a good idea about keeping the OEM rails for later. Might crack a beer and see whats up there.

I made my own, did 10,000 Klms, across the middle of Australia and on to Fraser Island, carting about 180 Kilos.

Is that rack mounted to the factory rails, or did you make some modifications? Could you possibly show more photos of how your rack is mounted?
