So nothing has to be done to the cars computer as the dealer claimed? This is just plug and play?

Re: 2014 JGC Brake Controller DIY

P3 is a Tekonisha Product. It is a great controller, but it needs to be permanently mounted and has to be horizontal, as I understand.

DirectLink and be mounted in any direction and you can just unplug it and store when not using it. They are both proportional and work with the Jeep computer.

The thing in the glove box is NOT a controller, it is a universal harness that connects from the jeep pre-wiring under the dash to the controller, but it is better to buy a pre-made one for the controller you buy, unless you are really good at splicing and are certain that the connections are solid. For me, it was worth the $15 for a pre-made harness.

Tekonisha makes a harness that works with their unit or the DirectLink.

I am also pulling a 7k max tandem axel cargo trailer.

Thank you Kjohnson, I already ordered the P3. I picked this truck up on Tuesday and the dealer was pushing to sell me their brake controller for $500 installed and they said the cars computer must be programmed or else it will flash check engine codes. What motor are you pulling with? I got the new diesel .

Dealer is full of it. The Tekonesha and the DirecLink work just fine with the Computer, no error codes. I have the Hemi, I wanted the Diesel but couldn't wait. When I got mine back in August, the Mopar Controller had not yet been approved for the 2014, they said it wouldn't work. Now they are telling you that it will. Even the docs for the Mopar Controller, which is not as good as either the DirecLink or P3 as it is not a proportional controller says it will not work if the vehicle doesn't have (2) 4 pin connectors pre-wired from the factory. I have not found one that has 2 connectors. I have the Summit, the tow pkg is not optional and it has only one so I'm not sure what they are talking about.

Trying to get information on this was very frustrating for me at first. Something is really out of whack with brake Controllers and Dodge/Jeep. This was frustrating since it is the reason I bought the Jeep and they advertise the heck out of their best in class towing capacity, so why don't they know more about critical towing accessories like a brake controller?

No worries for you though, the P3 will work great. Many on here have given testimony as to it working. I chose the DirectLink because I didn't want anything permanently installed.

Good luck and let me know how you like the power of the Diesel.

Re: 2014 JGC Brake Controller DIY

OK, Got my 2014 JGC Diesel last week and looking to put a brake controller in it. Planning to go with the DirecLink. I had the original Prodigy in my old MDX and it worked OK, but looking for something better.

For those who have used the DirecLink, what 4 pin wiring harness do you use? On line shops don't show a harness for the Jeep. Are you just splicing wires on the pigtail harness that came with the vehicle to a generic plug?

Thanks,

Mike

You can buy the tekonisha adaptor on Amazon for 15 bucks. It fits the Direclink. I forget the part number but it is easy to find. The 4 pin is the same on the p3, so it's the tekonisha connector for 2014 jeep. works perfectly.

Re: 2014 JGC Brake Controller DIY

It's #3045.

I bought the controller directly from Southwest Wheel. They fulfill for Amazon but charge shipping if you buy through Amazon (free shipping and no sales tax directly from them). They normally include the harness with the controller, but they don't stock the 3045, so had to get that directly from Amazon.

If looking for the Tekonsha brake controllers, try etrailer.com Brake Controller | etrailer.com

They carry various brands and have excellent service. I ordered 3045-P wire harness and brackets to install a controller from my prior vehicle, ordered after 5 on Friday and they were shipped that night by 9 pm.

Their prices for what I was looking for were better than Amazon if you consider shipping.

Re: 2014 JGC Brake Controller DIY

I got my DirecLink today. Soldered the stock 4 pin cable to the pigtail that came with the JGC. Works great! Will swap out with the 3045 harness when it shows up next week.

Those of you using the DirecLink, where are you mounting the control box? The OBDII cable is pretty short and limits placement somewhere on the drivers side around the steering wheel/pedals. No convenient place to attach it. Was thinking of using velcro on the panel I removed to get to the wiring, but it doesn't look like it will support the weight over time.

Thanks,

Mike
