Nope. Right now it's Jeep dealer or DIY.

Would never EVER go to one of those quick lube places anyway.

Re: 3.6L Pentastar Oil Filter - First Change

I've only used the Mopar oil filter for the V6.

Purolator has had a part number assigned for an equivalent filter for at least several weeks now. That's all they seem to have: just a part number, but no filters yet. Here's the linked page:
http://www.purolatorautofilters.net/...partnum=L36135

But seems that soon there will be at least one alternate supplier.

Re: 3.6L Pentastar Oil Filter - First Change

I had bought the V6 Pentastar oil filter from local Jeep dealers so far, but here is a much better price on eBay, for a three-pack:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2011-...#ht_500wt_1182

or single filters are available here:

My dealer set up first oil change at 8,000 kms (5,000 miles), but I bought a filter on the day I took delivery so I could change the filter sooner. So here are my findings at about 4,700 kms.

The change was a snap. Remove the access port in the engine cover and use a 15/16 socket to remove the filter cap, and the filter cartridge pulls out with the cap. The filter then unsnaps from the cap and a new one snaps in. They provide a new O-ring in the box with the filter. Only very minor drips need to be caught by towels or rags when the cap is removed. Very neat.

The oil was medium brown. Nothing unexpected for nearly 4,700 kms, and smelled normal. I took the old filter cartridge indoors and cut it open for inspection. The pleated cardboard is about a metre long when unfurled. I found many small metal flakes in the filter pleats, on the exterior side where they were caught. So the filter did its job. There were about 200 of these small flakes, ranging from pinpoints of reflected light to (0.3mm x 0.1mm x foil thickness) in size for the largest ones. More than I expected to find, but nothing alarming to me. The filter did its job and I will do another check of the replacement filter to see if any more flakes appear on the second filter, before the dealer does the 8,000km oil change.

Pics below show the findings. Sorry that focus on some metal flakes is not great; only my second stringer camera available today.
Thanks for the post. Helped me get an idea what I was dealing with before I did my first change yesterday in my Pentastar-powered Wrangler. Filter debris from mine looked almost identical at the 3,000 mile mark.

For anyone who's interested, I used my Pela extractor to pull the oil through the dipstick and out of the filter housing. I got just a hair over five quarts from the top. Then I pulled the drain plug out of curiosity and got about another half quart. I post this for the benefit of anyone considering doing a topside-only change. Be advised that more than a negligible amount of old oil will remain in your pan. Again, I estimate a half quart or so. That'll bother you if you're as anal as I am.

Great tip, thanks. I was thinking of doing that when the new buggy hits 1k miles to get rid of the breakin debris and put in Mobil 1. Our driveway and garage are gravel, no fun for working underside and creepers get bogged down. Can raise the suspension, but it would be a hell of a time for the air system to act up.

Re: 3.6L Pentastar Oil Filter - First Change

Looks like the worlds easiest filter change.

No need to throw away the metal casing each time. Looks like these filters could be accumulated and used for energy producing fuel.

My Jeep dealership has a 30 minute fast lane for oil changes. Usually runs $26.00
