It's a German thing held over from Daimler. BMW & VW have cartridges too. They are less expensive to make and easier to dispose of compared to spin-ons which cannot be incinerated. They have a higher surface area which holds more dirt and lowers pressure drop across the filter. The location is ideal. Mercedes does not even have a drain plug, they use a oil extractor (suction) through the dipstick tube to remove oil and the filter on top makes lifting the car unnecessary. It's not dumb, it's very convenient. I used to change my 530's oil that way in under 10 minutes, with no spills. Some Jeep owners use the suction method too. Oil extractors are awesome for lawn mowers, no tipping-no mess.

I respectfully disagree!
To me the 'spin on' metal filters are the 'going backwards in time' method.

I can't even count the number of times I've either encountered the canister filters spun on too tight or in very hard to reach areas or burning my hands spinning off a filter with hot oil in it.

Good f'ing riddance to the damn things!

Now I only burn my hands getting the oil pan plug out and I'm tempted to kill that issue too by getting a Fumoto drain plug valve.

And as others have pointed out, the non-canister filters are easier to recycle (you do recycle don't you?).

As for oil change intervals...
The ONLY reason I changed the OEM oil at 6000 miles (yes miles not KM) is because it was a lot vehicle and had been taken out on 'test' drives before I bought it. Otherwise I've stuck to 8000 miles or more interval and the fact that I use pure synthetic has me thinking I should extend it out to 10,000 miles and I would still be safe.

The 3000 mile myth should be killed by a nationwide Public Service Announcement on every TV channel possible for a week so people stop wasting resources (and lining the pockets of the stop-n-rob oil change chains).

Re: 3.6L Pentastar Oil Filter - First Change

Ok, so I have already posted on this thread. The "newer" oil filter housing is now harder to get to than the one in the original post. My 3.6L '12 GC had that filter housing, the 2016 3.6L I have now is different. On my 2016, when you lift the plastic lid, there is an air intake house in front of and slightly covering the housing. This makes accessing the filter harder.

Why is this important? The housing is made of plastic, and if the mechanic who is battling a 3" hose is trying to tighten the housing, he can crack it. On my first oil change in my '16 this past week, I found this out the hard way on I-95. The dealer I took it to, told me they have seen this before. So maybe a spin-on is better.

Yikes. I just had a look on my 2017. Your right that big intake is right in the way. I'm not to worried about cracking it, but it does look to be more annoying for sure. You don't use yours eyes to measure torque

Still has to be one of the easiest vehicles ever to change oil on.

Thanks for the heads up.
