add switched 12v outlet under front driver dash?

Hey guys,

Just picked up my '13 Laredo X a couple days ago and I want to hardwire a second (or 4th I guess technically) 12 volt outlet somewhere under the drivers side.

I want to plug in my GPS there so that I can run the wiring semi out of sight. As much as I can.

Anybody know the color of a switched wire that would work for this purpose?

Ive read that theres one under the shifter bezel for the 12 v but I was just hoping there was an easier one I could get to.

If I do go the under the shifter route does anybody know which color wire it is? Red?

Thanks!

Are the other lighter sockets switched? If so, tap into one of them.

Re: add switched 12v outlet under front driver dash?

You can use the 12VDC outlet below the radio or tap into it's wiring all depending on what type of GPS you have. Will have to remove a few trim pieces, but you can easily run a wire from there to either side of the dash.

*NOTE* On some GPS models, a voltage converter is integrated into the cig lighter plug of the unit itself. If you cut off this plug and wire it directly to a 12VDC source, you will have scorched earth inside your GPS.

Yeah my plan was to not direct wire the gps but rather to rig up another 12v cigarette outlet in the driver side footwell somewhere. That way if I change the gps it would be an easier job.

I've got the trim off around the shifter bezel but was thinking maybe one of you guys knew which wire would be a good one. I see a red wire there which I figure is the one but that could also be going to the battery powered 12v outlet in the console. Just thought somebody would know off hand.

For anybody else looking for switched power...

I installed the extra 12v power under the drivers side dash today. I was going to take pictures but when I saw how easy it was I forgot.

I tapped into the 12 volt lighter accessory outlet underneath the temp controls. You need to remove the Center bezel, the shifter bezel and then the Storage bin Center console.

You can get switched power off the 12v outlet in the storage bin. (Tap into the pink/blue striped wire.)

Or you can grab battery power from the 12v outlet in the storage arm rest. You only need to remove the shifter bezel for access.

Pretty easy.
