Re: Any ideas for making mirrors fold when doors are locked?

in my E class 2013 they automatically fold after you lock with the fob or press the lock button on any of the four door handles (Jeep has only two front doors, don't know why they didn't make it all four doors) got pissed a little & got confused a while. but I got used to it

they unfold upon approach or pressing the unlock on the key fob or holding any of the four door handles.

so its nice feature to have and wouldn't kill you if you don't have them, although wish all doors have the unlock feature WITH the folding mirrors

Haha it frustrates me too, that they were too cheap to put the auto-unlock on the back doors. Noticed this on other FCA cars too, like the Charger. Ford has it on all 4 doors.

They also cheapened out by not having the rear door windows auto up and down. Even Camrys have it and that's a much cheaper vehicle. Crappy beancounters justifying keeping their lucrative jobs.

Re: Any ideas for making mirrors fold when doors are locked?

Yes. My 2016 C Class mirrors fold when locking the doors from outside the vehicle. Unfold when unlocking. All set in user programming. I would love that on my High Altitude. My Infiniti had a dash two position switch that was energized only when Acc or On. When parking, I folded mirrors, turned off engine and turned the mirror switch back to unfolded position. Then, the mirrors would unfold as soon as I restarted engine. Whew! I would love to find a way to have them auto fold on exit and lock and unfold on entry.

I'm not sure that's a particularly great way to do it, either.

If I'm going to have automatically folding mirrors, I want them out of the way when I'm trying to get out from or into the area next to my vehicle when parking is tight. That means, they should fold in when the engine is turned off and unfold when it's turned on, with a manual override in case you need it.

That way, not only does it protect them from other careless people, but gets them out of you and your passengers' way. Plus, it lessens the amount of time power stuff needs to run on battery power.

Not saying it is fact, but I suspect the mirrors stay open till the car is locked so you can use them when parallel parked. So you don't open a door into a truck or cyclist. Or to see the mass murderer sneaking up on you.

Yeah, it's simple logic based. <input (button)> or <status (doors locked> = <output energized (fold mirrors). Not sure if he hacked some aspects of it but can't imagine so. They are going to load one program in all models but unlock features as required.
There used to be a thing importing motorcycle ECUs to Europe till they figured out the program was there just not enabled. We do all sorts of cool stuff with it now. We actually modify traction control on the bikes to allow a certain percentage of wheel speed difference (slide) instead of preventing it. All with the factory programming, just different variables.

Re: Any ideas for making mirrors fold when doors are locked?

the mirrors actually don't bother me that much since you can fold them manually and they are HUGE and little ugly when folded, mine is always unfolded EXCEPT in tight areas where they come handy.

What I really believe should be there is all doors have the lock/unlock feature on the door handles.

FWIW..
That would probably require another radar/sonar. The blind-spot radar is pointing at the side of your vehicle when the mirrors are folded, and a radar somewhere else (like the cross path radars) don't tell you anything about things in the vicinity of the mirrors.. also, radar is pretty sucky at resolving distances that small - so it would likely have to be sonar..

OK, sonar then. They could put a sensor at the end of the LED row closest to the center of the mirror back.

Honestly, though, that's more of a package upsell thing than anything since someone is almost never going to be close enough to where the mirror can't actually unfold safely. With the curve of the sides of most vehicles, to be that close would require the mid-section of the doors to be touching.

Simply having the manual button available for a tight space conflict with a mirror on another vehicle would probably be sufficient.

I can can accept that need. So, after you turn the vehicle off, as soon as you pop the door open, the mirror folds in, just like how the radio turns off at that point.

That way, it's still available before you open your door, but it's folded up by the time you have exited the vehicle and are trying to get out from between yours and the one beside it with your kid's baking soda volcano.
