Any ideas for making mirrors fold when doors are locked?

My 2014 overland has the power folding mirrors...but you have to press the button on the door to make them fold. From my understanding, most luxury SUV's that come with power folding mirrors also offer the ability to automatically have the fold in when you park the car and lock it.

Is there any electronics or programming gurus around that have tried to achieve this? or if not...is there anybody who would want to look at some wiring diagrams together to try to figure out a way to do this?

I believe this feature is activated in some other parts of the world, but Jeep was just cutting corners and building the vehicle as cheaply as they can for the US market.

Personally, if they were going to automatically fold, I would think it would make more sense to have them fold when you turn the engine off rather than when you're already outside the vehicle and locking it.

Some "luxury" SUV's do, some do not. Some are a manual activation like ours. Since the GC is essentially a Merc ML (some trim levels do auto fold when the car is locked manually or automatically) the task should be easy enough to do with the right software. It's just a matter of linking the input criteria to energizing the output to the motor. My old neighbor had it and we unlocked some neat stuff on mine- Passenger heated seat on remote start, remote window roll up, auto lock if key FOB not detected for 5 minutes, enabled GPS entry while in motion, etc.
Anyhoo, it's not wiring you need, it's programming.

It wouldn't have cost them a thing to make it the same here.

Then I guess Chrysler figures there would then be to many claims on the folding mirrors when they break under warranty. Which being a Chrysler product, they will.

Re: Any ideas for making mirrors fold when doors are locked?

It should be trivial to make them fold when locked however they would also do so when the doors auto lock when driving away, you would need to run a wire back to the shifter or PRND display to get the current gear to prevent that.

I figured it would be easy enough to connect a raspberry Pi or arduino board up to the CAN bus and read the data and send the signals to certain modules. But how did you do your modifications? That's exactly the kind of stuff I wanted to do.

Sorry you have a negative opinion of Chrysler. Ive had almost 200000 miles in the Jeep brand alone and only 5 trips to the dealer for repair. Better than any one of my 3 BMW records.

Same as the dealers use- WiTECH software. I didn't do it myself, he did it for me.

Wow so all that is possible with the programming that comes from the factory? Thanks for confirming. My buddy works at the dealer service department, I'll see if it's possible to hook up my car and make some changes.

Re: Any ideas for making mirrors fold when doors are locked?

At first I liked the idea and after a bit of thought I decided I didn't. If I want the mirrors folded it's so easy it's stupid. Once it becomes automatic you'll need to go into the menu and sub menu to put them in the normal position.

I like them the way they are. A button at your finger tips. Now on the other hand if they auto folded and the button set them back out..... then I might jump on board.

Re: Any ideas for making mirrors fold when doors are locked?

I think the optimal setup would be:

- Mirrors automatically fold in when the vehicle is turned off.
- Mirrors can be manually folded or unfolded with a button press.
- Mirrors would normally unfold when the ignition is turned on, but use the side radar to detect if there isn't room to do (such as a vehicle that is parked too close) so and only unfold them when the obstruction is not present.
