Bought a grille to color match

Just bought a chrome grille for my Laredo (not using my good one in case it turns out like crap) and am planning to paint it to see how it goes.

Probably going to shoot for a dark grey similar to the Offroad edition they had at SEMA or wherever, and if that doesn't work I'll just go for black.

My GC is black.

Any suggestions or tips?

So far the top ones I've found online from people that have painted chrome plastic before are:
-Rough it up with sandpaper.
-Spray some primer on it so the paint takes
... or else it'll chip like crazy.

Should I go for standard spray paint, plasti-dip, or like a DIY bedliner coating?

I was thinking of painting all my chrome dark charcoal but I don't know if it'd look too ghetto. I think a flat dark gray would contrast the pearl coat pretty well. Plastidip works well as there's no prep involved and if you don't like it you just peel it off. I hope you'll some some pics with your decision.

let a shop do it. It will be more durable.

I love this idea! I have been toying around painting all the chrome on the car matte black, but I'm waiting till after I do my LED replacements and HID fogs. I also want to paint the stock 18" wheels black as well. Please keep us posted and get some pics!

I had 3 shops look at the rear Jeep chrome bar across the tailgate and the front bumper grille. Not one of them wanted to take a shot, even with a waiver on peeling. The shops I'm going to are reliable, well established shops, not garage's in the boogie-down Bronx either.

Yea, not many shops will touch chrome, but it can be done with proper prep and materials. My skills however aren't good enough for me to risk on my real grille though.

Re: Bought a grille to color match

Hey REALM,

Here are a few processes you could try from other forums:

http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/25...ic-chrome.html

http://www.maseratilife.com/forums/d...ic-chrome.html

http://www.autopia.org/forum/car-det...er-chrome.html

Basically, sand till no shine, properly clean, prime, wet-sand, paint (many light coats) and finally seal. Remember, the Chrome that you are removing is Chrome Paint over plastic so it can always be re-done but the grille is a pain to take off - the bumper must be removed.

Just pay attention to proper primers and cleaners. I saw one site mentioned etching, but I am not sure how well that would work with plastic.

Do yourself a favor and separate the black insert from the chrome fascia. It will be much easier than taping. A small screwdriver in the tabs and the two pieces separate very easily.

Enjoy, and be sure to document the process for us

Re: Bought a grille to color match

I don't know if this will actually work on the grille, but with chromed plastic model pieces, bleach will break the chrome off much like a chemical paint stripper will do with painted metal. The stuff will just fall off when soaked. Might be worth a try. Once the chrome is off, you will just need to scuff the surface. The issue will be if you plan on keeping any of the chrome on the piece. I don't know of a good way to keep bleach from soaking into tape or anything you would want to keep the chrome on. The bleach will absolutely not harm the plastic.

Re: Bought a grille to color match

If you want to wipe the chrome off the plastic, try Acetone.
I do not know what it will do to the plastic underneath, but it will melt the chrome.

Re: Bought a grille to color match

Update: I'm taking pics all along the way and will post a writeup when complete, but...

Grille is sanded and primed, should be dry by morning for painting. Can't decide if I want to do gloss black, which won't fully match the blackberry but I think enough to look sharp.

So far 20 bucks worth of supplies, and 2 hours of sanding, so I only want to do this once.
