What do most people recommend for the break in period? Soft and easy until the first oil change, or drive it like it is stolen?

One question, a thousand answers :). I'm sure you've searched and found enough reading for a master's degree. Motoman's has worked great on everything I have ever broken in. The Jeep is driven and tested at the factory so prob doesn't matter much, but I still do his recommendations. The first oil change I always do around 500 miles just in case anything is in there, but like many have said before if stuff is in there its prob. to late.

Enjoy your Jeep, wish I had mine ....

The owner's manual also says, "while cruising, brief full-throttle acceleration contributes to good break-in. WOT acceleration in low gear can be detrimental and should be avoided." Seems like Chrysler is somewhere in the middle of the baby it/throttle it stance.

What the manual say is reasonable.
One things is brake the engine (racer car or on bench engine) other is drive the new car.
The car is not “just engine” has a lot of other mechanical things.
You break the engine as You stole the car and: whats up is there is even small assembly problem and You smash into a wall?
Its happened already…
For me, since the car is NEW and I DON’T KNOW IT I will start slowly
Running like a crap for first miles or as a good “family father/grandfather” will not change anything into life of the engine, fuel consumption, gas mileage.
Go prudent first miles just make ppl more confident with whole car, and avoid damages.

Basically this is what it comes down to. ALWAYS let the engine get up to operating temperature before really getting on it. Dont let the car sit and idle to "warm it up", get in the car and drive normally to get to operating temp. This should always be rule of thumb during break in period and the life of the vehicle.

As for the break is simply follow the owner manual. It sounds like some WOT is a good thing BUT I would never do it from a dead stop. Only do WOT while cruising at speed. Dont forget there are other parts of the car that must be broken in to such as the transmissing and gear differentials. WOT from a dead stop will be the last thing you want to do to properly seat in gears.
