Changing flat observations

Last week fiance was driving on the Florida Turnpike and got a flat. Screw in the tread. It had 1152 miles. Grrrrr. it was night and she was close enough that I was able to go there to do the change. Driver's rear.

Observations:
The jack has to go really high and even though we were level on pavement it seemed much more tippy than other stock jacks I've used. Next time I will bring Jack stands or see if I can fit one in the spare area.

Putting pockets back in spare tire location was confusing. They didn't seem to fit correctly either way but were different. I figured it out from one having stuff in it and remembering which side it was on. Next time I will place them on the ground the same way they fit.

Spare is smaller than stock so stock tire makes the deck lid bulge even without the pockets in there. Not fun if you have cargo back there.

Lug wrench is short. She couldn't operate it but it was ok for me. I am going to put a pipe in there so she can use it for leverage if I'm not around.

Using lug wrench and the attachment to work the jack was clumsy. Not easy as some stock jacks I've used.

Guess the good news was the tire was repairable and we got it fixed and running within an hour of me arriving. Hope this helps.

Re: Changing flat observations

Did you disengage the QL ? If not the tire will keep on dropping till the last point.

The pockets did not fit because the flat tire is bigger.

Re: Changing flat observations

Instead of a pipe, consider a 4-way lugwrench. It will fit right on top of the spare tire if placed correctly and will give you plenty of leverage when loosening lugnuts.

Re: Changing flat observations

We don't have the quad lift. Its a 4x2 mommy car. She drives it mostly and I have the Armada for towing and beach duty. Rather get the sand and salt on it than in the overland lol. The 4 way would be good for me but I want the extra length for her to get the torque going. With the pipe I can double the length and give her plenty of torque so she can move it. With the stock wrench she actually stood on it and it didn't move.

As for the pockets that is exacvtly why. Stock tire is larger so the pockets don't fit with stock in bottom, so you need to put them above till its fixed. PITA for no reason. They should have designed them to fit with the full size too. A little smaller pocket but who cares.

Thanks for the replies.

although i seriously doubt this was there reasoning but making it an awkward fit forces you to get the original tire repaired and return the spare to its stored position.

i remember years ago someone taught me to leave the hubcap off after putting the spare tire on to act as a visual "reminder" to get the original tire fixed, back in the good old days of full size spares and bumper jacks. they were great if you got stuck in mud just jack it up all the way and push it off the jack and the height of the jack would let the vehicle span the mud hole before the wheel hit the ground, ah good times
