CHR550 + Rear Monitors + Valentine 1 Install Summary



The victim:
My wife’s 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo X w/430 Nav.

The motive:
To keep our 3 and 5 year olds occupied.

The parts:
CHR550
2x Pyle 7” Monitors
2x Pyle Headrest Mounts
1x Valentine 1 hardwire kit

This installation was possibly the easiest and smoothest install I’ve ever done on any of my cars. The panels on the WK2 are easy to detach and there are plenty of places to hide components and wires.

For the rear monitors, two Pyle 7” units and two Pyle headrest mounts were ordered. To my dismay, both of these items aren’t what I had expected and once complete I caught myself saying, “you get what you pay for”. I’ll go into further detail about these two products later.

The only difficult part of the entire install was getting the cables to fit underneath the headrest release tabs. With the backs of the seats removed, it just took some poking and prodding to accomplish the task.





Our WK2 doesn’t come with Selec-track and the void makes a perfect place to hide the control modules for the monitors, as seen in the photo below.


The wires were then routed against the center well under the carpet, then out under the seat. I could not find a way to fully enclose the wire within the seat, therefore a small section of wire is visible in the back where the upper section meets the lower.


Now onto the Valentine 1 and Lockpick CHR550. I won’t go into detail of the Lockpick install, because you can find a fantastic write up that Radside did here >> http://jeepgarage.org/showthread.php?t=16454
The only thing I did differently was to move the brain of the Lockpick to the space below the passenger side vent. There’s a nice empty space there between the HVAC controls and glove box. I decided on this location because it'll make updating it easier, and I also added some RCA extension cables which I routed along the transmission tunnel so that we can hook up the Wii to for longer roadtrips.


Since the Lockpick comes with a 12v, acc, and ground within the harness, I thought it’d be great to tap into it for my Valentine1.

And where I have the V1 (for now). I’ve ordered another concealed display and I’ll relocate the V1 to somewhere a bit stealthier.


Here’s a photo of the CHR550. One question I had before ordering was the length of the harness so that I could think of places to mount the brain. As you can see, the harness is very long, as is the iPhone cable.



Final Impressions & Tips:

IF I had to do it all over again, I’d subtract PYLE from the setup. I’ve got my eye on a few different universal headrest mounts with ” slide brackets and I’ll choose one after some more research.

You can see the gap between the monitor and the headrest. Without anything to support it, it shook considerably over bumps. You can see my temp fix – it’s a stress squeezy spongy thing that I cut and taped. It works well, but something I wish I didn’t have to do. I’ll figure something out later to replace this with. Also, the monitors don’t stay true on the bracket, so I had to use some double sided 3M emblem tape (the best stuff ever) to secure it to the metal posts. Oh, and the 7” is a tad too small and you can see the steel elbow. I’ve since painted the elbow section black, but I think I’ll be ordering a set of 9” monitors shortly to replace these with.



Now onto the monitors. They suck. As I was tightening the rear screws to try to keep them from tilting, I heard a crack. Powered the monitors on and found out I have a thin line of dead pixels across the lower portion of the screen. The other side works, but threes no way to control the brightness and at night it blinds my son. Also, the 7” are a bit small too. On our last car, we had 8” monitors incorporated into the headrests. Thought the kids wouldn’t notice, but they do. Also, with the shitty Pyle brackets, the 7” doesn’t have enough surface area to hide the headrest bracket and mount elbow sufficiently.


Some tips on the installation:

Tip 1: the seat backs are held on with clips on the center and bottom sections. The tops are held in with metal “C” clamps that somehow hook into the frame. I’m not really sure how it works, but I do know that the easiest way to get the backs to fit flush once complete is to start with the bottom clips and then work your way up to the top. Once you’ve got the bottom and middle clips in, guide the top clips under the padding and they’ll clip on to something.. really I have no idea what it clips into, but it does!

Tip 2: If you decide to mount the brain where I mounted mine, connect the AUX IN, Monitor RCA out, iPhone and USB cables first, BUT do not connect the harness. Once you get the brain into the location, and then connect the harness. Take a zip tie and secure the brain to the existing clip that holds the wire that powers the glove box light.

Tip 3: Inspect your factory connections into your headunit. I found that the U-Connect harness was barely attached and bare wire was exposed. I re-seated the pin and covered the exposed wire with some electric tape.

Tip 4: Some have stated that the Lockpick harness doesn’t fit into the stock harness or the back of the headunit. IF you connect the harnesses slowly together at a 10-15* angle, the bottom pins will catch first and the top pins will slide in smoothly.

Tip 5: Keep a copy of the Lockpick Menu instructions IN THE CAR. Trying to figure out how to switch from iPhone video to DVD video on the fly is frustrating. Hell, it took me 15 minutes on the side of the road to figure out how to get the movies on the iPhone to play on the rear screens!

Tip 6: If you’re in the market for a Lockpick CHR550, you probably already know that they’re available outside of Coastal for considerably less. I purchased mine off eBay from seller “12volt...” and it was the worst experience I’ve had with an eBay merchant over the 15 years I’ve been on the bay. My main reason buying it from him was the price, I also liked that he offered expedited shipping. What was not disclosed was the lead time for him to actually ship the item out. For a week I sent daily emails with no response. Once I raised a dispute, he finally returned my query. 4 days after the dispute, he decided to ship it (15 days after payment). Do not buy anything from this DB. Hindsight, I should’ve purchased it directly from Coastal or one of their trusted affiliates.

looks great, but why the V1 down in that corner? it's pointing at an angle and what about rear detection?

Once the concealed display arrives, I'll mount the V1 above (behind) the rear view mirror. The photo was taken rather hastily. It's now mounted straight ahead.

I switched a few things around over the weekend.

I found out that in order to play DVDs from the 430 and have them play on the rear monitors, I had to physically connect them to the VES output on the harness.

Since I was in there, I decided to move the lockpick from the void under the passenger center vent to under the trim directly under the steering wheel with double sided tape and a couple zip ties for the harness and cables. All ports are easily accessible - USB updating & Wii.

Another thing I learned while fiddling with the unit was the new OVR (override) mode. With OVR off, nothing seemed to work while in motion. Turned OVR on, and everything seemed to work as expected. There's no mention in any instructions what OVR is but it seems to make everything work for me.
