Re: Disable auto lift gate

This automatic gate has taken the utility away from my Jeep, it feels more like a minivan to me with it, here are some reasons why I want it gone.

- with my WK I was able to load long saplings (root first in pot) then lower the gate while directing the saplings through the open flipper glass, then drive home with the license plate still visible, can't do that in the Overland.

- with my WK I could load 2X4's in the hatch and slowly lower the gate down to wood and tie the gate down, now I would have to go against the gear box and possible harm it.

- in the winter when washing the WK I could open the hatch 2" run my sponge on the inner lip to get the salt off, now I will have to try and stop the gate by puling handle twice, by the time it stops it will be too far open

- I leave my bike carrier on the back in the summer, if I open the hatch without lowering the carrier I will hit it.

_ with the bike carrier I was able lift the hatch enough to let our dogs out and slip them in, can't do that now

- Periodically I park the Jeep too close to the garage door (depending what is in front) and can load items in by partially opening the gate without having to open the garage door.

- I live in a very cold environment in the winter, sometimes the hatch gate will not open from ice, I can judge manually if I want to force it open but being auto it will probably damage the body before it stops trying.

- this option could pose a hazard to our pets and child if they were to get any body part in it while it is closing, which it can do remotely. I would rather take that possibility away.

As Fundguy stated, it doesn't take a lot of pressure to cause the gate to reverse itself, either opening or closing.

Are willing to try it out on a child's hand/fingers or animals paw?

Re: Disable auto lift gate

You do realize you don't need to use the power open option and you can just do it manually. It won't hurt the gearbox and it isn't a problem to do. Its optional. Just close it without using the button, or open the glass for most of what you are posting as well.

Thanks for trying to help, but "You do realize" I was asking for info on how to disable the auto lift gate (like the title reads)
No worries

When you say disable I thought you meant permanently. That's how it read. If you want to do it temporarily, easiest way is open it with power then close manually to where you want it.

Sure. I've had it tried out on me. Takes a pound or two of pressure. Chances are it would be stopped by a light bulb or an egg.

I have tried it w/ my fingers and it reverses...there are several videos on Youtube as well of people trying. Auto closing lift gates are not new technology by any stretch of the imagination. At least 10 yr old technology...

Re: Disable auto lift gate

Rented a 2011 Durango last year with the power lift gate and it was a royal pain! So ordered my 2012 GC Limited without that or the QL air suspension. Glad I did.

However, it takes more than a light touch (more than my 05 WK Laredo) to close the lift gate securely ... but no big deal once you get used the the right amount of down pressure.

I tried stopping it on mine and it would break all the bones in my dogs foot, how about trying it with your fingers between the taillights where the hatch closes, I am quite positive it would be a hospital visit for any child.

We also have had technology for 10 years with weight sensing front passenger seat for the airbag, but for some reason we are told to still put children in the back seat, why is that?

With your LTD can you open the hatch door when the flipper glass is open?

I was actually going to start a new thread, but then found this. I was actually wondering this exact thing. I have the power liftgate and saw a video of someone with an overland manually closing their liftgate. So, you can use it manually and it won't damage anything??
I worry sometimes leaving my jeep somewhere like when it was at the body shop for a dent repair, or even when going to the car wash. (Never actually taken it to the car wash yet, prefer washing myself) LOL!
What if they open and or close your tailgate manually not realizing it is power......will it break the tailgate?
